Eligibility
Foreign nationals who have held a valid temporary residence permit and resided continuously in North Macedonia for at least 5 years may apply for permanent residence. Continuity requirements apply: no single absence may exceed 6 consecutive months and total absences must not exceed 10 months during the 5-year qualifying period.

Eligibility
Foreign nationals who have held permanent residence in North Macedonia for at least 7 years may apply for citizenship (reduced from 8 years under the 2022 amended Citizenship Law). The requirement is reduced to 3 years of permanent residence for foreign nationals who are married to a Macedonian citizen. Knowledge of the Macedonian language is required in both cases.

Citizenship law in North Macedonia is technically complex and can be politically sensitive. Use legal advice before relying on any investment- or origin-based claim. Marriage does not create automatic or immediate citizenship. The standard permanent residence requirement still applies first, then the 3-year spousal naturalisation period runs. North Macedonia permits dual citizenship so renunciation of prior nationality is not required.

Dual citizenship is allowed β North Macedonia permits dual citizenship. Foreign nationals who naturalise as citizens of North Macedonia are not required to renounce their prior nationality under Macedonian law, and Macedonian citizens who acquire a foreign nationality do not automatically lose their Macedonian citizenship. Your other country of citizenship may or may not permit dual nationality β check with your home-country embassy before proceeding.
