💡 Integration Tips
- ✓ Learn basic Arabic greetings (As-salamu alaykum, Shukran, Afwan) — deeply appreciated by Omani colleagues and neighbours
- ✓ Accept hospitality: if invited for kahwa (cardamom coffee) and dates, always accept — declining is considered rude. Shake cup to indicate you are finished.
- ✓ Understand Ramadan: during the holy month, do not eat, drink, or smoke in public during daylight hours (even if non-Muslim). Offices have reduced hours. Evening is festive (iftar gatherings).
- ✓ Dress modestly in public — cover shoulders and knees especially at souqs, mosques, government offices. Expat-friendly areas (Qurum, Al Mouj) are more relaxed but modesty is still appreciated.
- ✓ Friday is sacred: most activities slow or stop for Friday prayers (noon–2pm). Good time for outdoor excursions.
- ✓ Build Omani friendships: Omanis are genuinely warm and hospitable when approached respectfully. Through work colleagues, shared sports activities, or neighbourly relations — invest in these relationships.
- ✓ Join a wadis/hiking group: Oman's natural landscape (Wadi Shab, Jebel Akhdar, Wahiba Sands) is spectacular. Hiking/camping groups are popular and a great way to meet both expats and Omanis.
Sports & Leisure
Oman offers excellent outdoor sports (hiking, diving, wadi bashing, rock climbing, golf, sailing) due to its varied landscape. Indoor facilities are high quality in Muscat. Heat (40°C+) limits outdoor activities May–September but makes Oct–April ideal for outdoor recreation.
Sports Club Culture
Muscat has active sports clubs for cricket (large South Asian expat scene), football (indoor 5-a-side popular), tennis, cycling, golf, triathlon, and running. Weekend wadis trips and desert camping are major social activities. Beach clubs: Al Bustan Palace, Shangri-La, Muscat Hills offer day passes.
