💼 Work Permits

EU Citizens

EU citizens have no special treatment in Oman — same process as all non-GCC nationals. Requires employer sponsorship, work permit from Ministry of Labour, and residence visa. No EU-specific fast track exists.

Non-EU Citizens

All non-Omani nationals require an employer-sponsored work permit (tasrih). The employer applies to the Ministry of Labour; the employee receives an employment visa stamped at the border or via eVisa. The work permit is tied to the employer — changing jobs within the first 2 years requires an NOC from the current employer or waiting for permit expiry. GCC nationals have easier mobility.

EU Blue Card

Oman has no equivalent of the EU Blue Card. High-skilled professionals are processed the same way as other work permit holders. However, Oman's Golden Visa (introduced 2021, expanded 2024) offers a 10-year residence permit for investors (OMR 500,000+ investment), professionals with special skills (scientists, doctors, engineers), and retirees (OMR 4,000/month income or OMR 250,000 in deposits).

Freelancer Visa

There is no official freelancer or digital nomad visa in Oman as of 2026. Self-employed individuals must form a company or be sponsored by a business entity. Remote workers living in Oman typically enter on a visit visa and renew every 30–90 days, which is a grey area legally. A formal digital nomad visa is under consideration within Vision 2040.

Typical hours 8–9 hours/day; 45–48 hours/week; government: 7:30 am–2:30 pm Sun–Thu; private sector varies 8 am–5 pm or 9 am–6 pm; split shifts in traditional businesses; Ramadan: reduced to 6 hours/day

Annual leave 30 calendar days annual leave (after 6 months service); Eid al-Fitr typically 3 days; Eid al-Adha 3 days; National Day 2 days; many employers offer 35–40 days total with public holidays

Sick leave 10 days full pay, 20 days half pay, 30 days no pay per year; doctor's certificate required; long-term illness: 6 months full pay, 6 months half pay for certain conditions

Salary range Junior: OMR 350–600/month; Mid-level: OMR 700–1,500/month; Senior: OMR 1,500–4,000/month; Management: OMR 3,000–8,000+. Oil/gas sector pays 30–50% premium. Note: many packages include accommodation, transport, and medical allowances which are separate from base salary.
