Digital Services

Digital ID, e-government and essential apps in United Kingdom.

GOV.UK One Login

A unified government digital identity being progressively rolled out to replace the many separate login systems previously used across government services. One Login uses email/phone verification and document-based identity checks to create a reusable verified digital identity that works across HMRC, DWP, DVLA, passport services, and many other government platforms.

How to get it: Create an account at account.gov.uk. You'll need: email address, phone number, and for verified identity: a valid passport, driving licence, or other supported ID document. Identity verification can be done via the GOV.UK app (using your phone camera to scan documents and take a selfie) or at a Post Office. Progressive rollout — not all services have switched to One Login yet.

E-Government Portal

https://www.gov.uk

GOV.UK is excellent — comprehensive, clear, and reliable. It is the gold standard for government digital services globally. Always access UK government services via gov.uk directly (not via search engines where scam sites appear). Many private companies charge for services available free on gov.uk — DVLA licence renewal, passport applications, etc. are all free or at standard government fee rates on gov.uk. Warning: gov.uk looks like a single site but many services are now accessed via GOV.UK One Login.

The UK is a global leader in government digital services — GOV.UK is internationally recognised as the best government website in the world. However, the NHS App and HMRC systems still have gaps and inconsistencies. The UK is NOT subject to EU digital regulations post-Brexit (no GDPR as such, but the UK GDPR (retained in UK law) is essentially equivalent). Data protection complaints: Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk. UK digital ID is developing but the GOV.UK One Login rollout means a unified identity is emerging. Watch for further integration across government services through 2026 and beyond.
