Primary School (Reception–Year 6)

Apply via your local council admissions authority (typically October–January for September intake for Reception). Admission criteria: catchment area, sibling priority, faith criteria (for church schools), medical/social needs. SIAP (School In Year Admissions Protocol) for mid-year applications. Private primary schools require their own application processes — fees typically £4,000–7,000/term in London.

The UK has outstanding state primary schools, but there is significant variation. Outstanding Ofsted ratings are competitive. Grammar schools exist in some areas (Kent, Lincolnshire, parts of London) — require the 11+ exam. SATs (Standard Assessment Tests) at Year 2 and Year 6. Academy and free schools operate outside local authority control but follow the National Curriculum.

Apply via local council admissions process in Year 6 (September/October). Heavily oversubscribed in popular areas. GCSEs taken at 16 (Year 11). A-levels or BTECs at 18 (Year 13). Private secondary schools (independent schools, "public schools") charge fees typically £15,000–45,000/year for boarding.

GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) are taken at 16 in up to 10 subjects — grades 9 (highest) to 1. A-levels (Advanced Level): typically 3 subjects, 2 years, grades A*–E — the primary university entry qualification. Scottish Highers are the equivalent in Scotland. Independent (private/public) schools: Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Westminster — expensive but highly networked. Many offer bursaries. UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) manages university applications.

International Schools

London and major UK cities have numerous international schools: American Community School, British School (International curriculum), French Lycée (e.g., Lycée Charles de Gaulle), Deutsche Schule London, Nord Anglia Education, ACS International Schools, King's College International Schools. Fees: typically £18,000–35,000/year. International Baccalaureate (IB) available at many international schools. Good option for expat families who expect to move again. Admissions competitive — apply 6–12 months in advance. International school locations clustered around Embassy districts (Kensington, Chelsea, Hampstead).

University

Tuition fee

£9,790/year for UK students (Home rate, 2026–27 cap); £9,535 was the 2025–26 cap (first increase since 2017). £15,000–45,000/year for international students. Post-Brexit: EU students now pay international fees (no longer Home rate). Student loans available for UK/settled status students.

Semester fee

No semester fee — tuition fees are annual. Universities charge tuition directly. Maintenance costs: typically £12,000–20,000/year in London; £10,000–15,000 elsewhere. Accommodation: university halls of residence typically £6,000–12,000/year; private student accommodation £7,000–16,000/year in London.

Student visa

Non-UK/Irish students (including EU post-Brexit) need a Student visa. Requirements: Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the university, financial proof (£1,483/month for London; £1,136/month outside London), English language (IELTS Academic or equivalent), ATAS certificate for some subjects. ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

Provider: Further Education colleges, community centres, local councils · Duration: Part-time: 3–12 months per level. Full-time intensive: 6–12 weeks. · Levels: Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1, Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE English)

Free for eligible learners (those on qualifying benefits, asylum seekers, low income). Others: £200–1,000+ per course depending on level and duration.

Widely available across the UK. Find local ESOL classes at learningandwork.org.uk. Many community organisations offer free conversational English classes. British Council also provides resources.

IELTS Preparation Course

Provider: British Council, IDP, language schools (many across UK) · Duration: 2–12 weeks intensive preparation · Levels: IELTS Academic (university/professional) and IELTS General Training (migration/work)

£400–1,500 for intensive preparation courses. IELTS exam fee: £195.

Required for Student visa, Skilled Worker visa (for some nationalities), and many professional registrations (IELTS B2 minimum). British Council and IDP are the main authorised test centres. Also: UKVI IELTS specifically for visa purposes (must be at approved test centre).

Trinity ESOL / Cambridge English

Trinity ISE (Integrated Skills in English) and Cambridge B1/B2/C1/C2 are accepted for Life in the UK and citizenship applications alongside IELTS. Widely recognised for visa and citizenship purposes.
