Rabies vaccination and titre test (if required): £50–200. Health certificate from accredited vet: £100–250. Microchipping: £20–50 (if not already done). Airline pet transport: £150–800 depending on size and carrier. APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency) approved carrier for routes requiring it: additional costs.
📋 Relocation Process
1. Microchip your pet (must be chipped BEFORE rabies vaccination). 2. Vaccinate against rabies (at least 21 days before travel — must wait 21 days after the FIRST vaccine; if previously vaccinated and up-to-date, this wait does not apply). 3. For dogs travelling from some countries: tapeworm (Echinococcus) treatment by vet 1–5 days before entering the UK (NOT required from all countries — check the current list at gov.uk). 4. Get a health certificate (AHC — Animal Health Certificate) from an Official Veterinarian within 10 days of travel (or an EU pet passport for travel from EU countries). 5. Travel via an approved route (approved carriers and border crossing points). 6. Register with a UK vet upon arrival.
The UK left the EU Pet Travel Scheme rules on 1 January 2021 — EU pet passports are no longer automatically accepted for travel FROM the EU TO the UK (they are still recognised for travel FROM the UK into the EU). If travelling from the EU to the UK, you need an AHC (Animal Health Certificate) issued by an official vet in the EU. The UK has its own pet travel rules. Certain high-risk rabies countries require a blood titre test (rabies antibody blood test) before entry — check the gov.uk list. XL Bullies are the most recently banned breed (February 2024) and cannot be imported or owned without an exemption certificate. Banned breeds face seizure and destruction. Pet insurance in the UK is comprehensive and recommended — monthly premiums: £15–80 depending on breed, age, and cover level.
