Long-term EU Resident Status
Eligibility
Third-country nationals who have legally and continuously resided in Belgium for at least 5 years. EU citizens have the right of permanent residence after 5 years of legal residence.
Duration
EU long-term resident permit: indefinite (subject to renewal formality every 5 years). EU citizens' permanent residence card: indefinite.

Declaration (verklaring / déclaration de nationalité) is the primary route for most naturalisations; formal naturalisation is now rare and reserved for exceptional cases. The 5-year standard route and 3-year participation declaration route both require Belgian language knowledge and economic/social integration proof. Applications are filed at the courthouse (vredegerecht / justice de paix) and decided by the Public Prosecutor — processing can take 1–2 years.

Citizenship via Marriage / Legal Cohabitation with a Belgian Citizen
Eligibility
Foreign nationals married to (or in legal cohabitation with) a Belgian citizen may acquire Belgian nationality by declaration after 3 years of legal residence in Belgium, provided the marriage or legal cohabitation has existed for at least 3 years and the couple have lived together during that period. The economic and social participation requirement is waived for qualifying spouses.

This is a 3-year residence route rather than the 5-year standard path. The marriage or legal cohabitation must be genuine — authorities may check the reality of the relationship. Direct citizenship-by-marriage (without a residence requirement) was abolished in Belgium in 1985.

Dual citizenship is allowed — Belgium fully permits dual (or multiple) citizenship as of 2008. You do not need to renounce your original nationality when naturalising as Belgian. Your home country's rules on dual citizenship apply separately — some countries do not permit their nationals to hold another citizenship, which is the applicant's responsibility to verify.
