Belgium's linguistic landscape is unique and complex: Dutch (Flemish variant) is spoken by ~60% of the population in Flanders and northern Brussels; French by ~40% in Wallonia and southern Brussels; and German by a small community (~1%) in the eastern cantons of Liège province. Most Belgian professionals, especially in Brussels, speak at least two of the national languages plus English. Learning the dominant local language for your region dramatically improves both professional opportunities and social integration. For expats in Brussels, either French or Dutch is useful depending on where you work and live.
Inburgeringstraject (Flanders) / Parcours d'intégration (Wallonia/Brussels)
Mandatory for certain non-EU newcomers aged 18+ in Flanders. Voluntary but recommended in Wallonia and Brussels. EU citizens are not legally required but are strongly encouraged to participate.
Subsidised or free for mandatory participants; registration fee of €60–180 for some courses
Flanders: 90–120 hours of language (NT2) + civic orientation + job guidance. Wallonia: flexible programme via FOREM/CPAS.
Minimum A2 level in spoken Dutch (Flanders); B1 target. Completion contributes to permanent residence applications.

NT2 (Nederlands als tweede taal) / FLE (Français Langue Étrangère)
Government-subsidised language courses for adult newcomers. NT2 in Flanders and Brussels; FLE across Wallonia and French Brussels. Taught at community colleges (CVO — Centrum voor Volwassenenonderwijs) and integration centres.
All adults legally resident in Belgium. Some courses are income-tested for the subsidised rate.
€0–€200 per level/module (subsidised rate for eligible newcomers); €200–€500 standard market rate
Flanders: via volwassenenonderwijs.be or your commune's integration service. French-speaking: via FOREM.be, CPAS, or the Centre for Languages (CAIPS, ITECO).

Can interact fluently with native speakers, understand complex texts on concrete and abstract topics.
Required for: Most Belgian white-collar jobs in Flemish companies; French-medium university entry
Near-native fluency — can use language flexibly for social, academic, and professional purposes.
Required for: Senior roles in Belgian companies; teaching in Belgian schools; fully qualifying professionals in regulated sectors.
Mastery — near-native proficiency in all four skills. Can understand and express anything with precision in Dutch or French.
Required for: Translation, interpretation, academic publishing, editorial and senior diplomatic roles in Belgian institutions.

The Flemish government funds NT2 language courses via the Integration and Citizenship Agency (Agentschap Inburgering en Integratie). The cost is further subsidised for participants in the mandatory integration programme. Some mutualities and communes offer vouchers for language learning. Employers can fund language training tax-efficiently as a professional expense. VDAB (Flanders employment service) funds free language training for job seekers.
