Payment Culture
Bolivia is predominantly cash-based. Cards are accepted in larger hotels, restaurants and supermarkets in cities, but rural areas and markets operate entirely in cash. Always carry Bs.50–200. USD can be exchanged at casas de cambio and banks at official rates.
🏧
ATM Tips
Use BNB, Banco Unión or BCP ATMs for best reliability. Many machines limit withdrawals to Bs.2,000–3,000 per transaction. Notify your home bank before travel. ATMs can run out of cash before long weekends.
💱
Exchange Tips
The official BOB/USD rate is fixed at approximately Bs.6.96/USD. Casas de cambio on Calle Colón (La Paz) offer similar rates. Avoid informal street changers. USD 100 notes get the best rate.
