Visa-Free Access

Most nationalities can enter Bolivia visa-free for 30–90 days as tourists. EU citizens: 90 days. USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK: 90 days. Mercosur members (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay): up to 90 days with ID card only. Total tourist stay cannot exceed 90 days in a 365-day period (some nationalities 180 days by bilateral treaty). Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months on entry.

All residency applications are submitted at the Cancillería (Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores) in La Paz, or at departmental Cancillería offices. The Dirección General de Migración (migration authority) is under Cancillería. Documents in foreign languages must be apostilled (Hague Convention) or legalised (consular legalisation for non-Hague countries) and officially translated into Spanish by a MINEDU-certified translator. The immigration system is paper-based and can be slow — factor 2–3 months for the complete process. An immigration lawyer (abogado migratorio) is strongly recommended: typical fee USD 200–500. Keep copies of all submitted documents. After 2 years of temporary residence, permanent residence (residencia permanente) is available. After 3 years of permanent residence, citizenship (naturalización) can be applied for.

💡 Employer must apply for the Autorización de Trabajo (AT) from Ministerio de Trabajo simultaneously. The AT application takes 4–6 weeks. Without AT, the labour visa cannot be issued. The 15% foreign worker quota rule applies per company.

Eligibility

Bolivia has no dedicated digital nomad visa as of 2026. Remote workers and freelancers with regular foreign income typically use the Rentista Temporary Residence (see visaTypes), which requires demonstrating passive/foreign income of approximately USD 1,000/month and does not restrict earning from abroad.
