๐
Permanent Residency
Name
Permanent Residence Certificate (PR)
Eligibility
Foreign nationals who have resided lawfully in the Cayman Islands for at least 8 continuous years and accumulate a minimum of 110 points under the Cayman Islands points-based immigration system. Points are awarded for length of residence, education and training, Caymanian connections (spouse, children, parents), local investment, community integration and cultural knowledge. PR carries the right to live and work in Cayman indefinitely without a specific employer-tied work permit.
Duration
Permanent, subject to compliance and payment of annual fees; document renewed periodically
Requirements
- โMinimum 8 years of continuous lawful residence in the Cayman Islands
- โMinimum 110 points under the Cayman points-based system (categories: residence duration, education/training, Caymanian family connections, local investment, community integration, cultural knowledge)
- โClean criminal record โ police clearance from Cayman and home country
- โValid private health insurance
- โEvidence of financial self-sufficiency or employment
- โApplication to the Cayman Islands Department of Immigration with full supporting documentation
- โApplication and annual certificate fees apply
PR is highly technical and should be planned well before any term-limit pressure arises. The Cayman Islands operates a term-limit system for most work permit holders; accumulating sufficient residence years and points before the term-limit cutoff is critical. Points for Caymanian family ties, local property investment, community volunteering and cultural engagement can be decisive. PR does not automatically confer the Right to be Caymanian or BOTC status โ these are separate subsequent steps.
๐ชช
Citizenship
Name
British Overseas Territories Citizen (BOTC) โ Cayman Islands
Eligibility
Persons who have held Permanent Residence in the Cayman Islands for at least 5 continuous years may apply for BOTC status through the Governor's Office. BOTC is British Overseas Territories Citizenship connected to Cayman โ it provides a Cayman Islands (BOTC) passport but does not automatically confer the right to live and work in the United Kingdom.
Duration
Permanent BOTC status once granted
Requirements
- โ5 years of continuous Permanent Residence in the Cayman Islands
- โNo more than the permitted absences during the 5-year qualifying period
- โGood character โ clean criminal record
- โKnowledge of the Cayman Islands (history, culture, institutions) assessed as part of the application
- โApplication to the Governor's Office, Cayman Islands
- โApplication fee applies
BOTC connected to the Cayman Islands does not grant the right of abode in the United Kingdom. Eligible BOTC holders may register as full British Citizens via Form B(OTA) submitted to the UK Home Office โ this confers the right to live and work in the UK and a full British (not BOTC) passport. UK law permits dual citizenship, so BOTC and British citizenship can be held alongside other nationalities.
Other Routes to Residency & Citizenship
Right to be Caymanian
Eligibility
The Right to be Caymanian (RtbC) is a status distinct from PR and BOTC that confers full Caymanian rights โ including the right to work without any permit, own property anywhere in Cayman, participate in local elections and access government employment. Effective May 1, 2026 (Caymanian Protection Act reform), eligibility requires: (a) 20 years of continuous ordinary residence for most applicants (increased from 15 years); (b) 15 years for spouses of Caymanians; or (c) 10 years of residence after obtaining a certificate of naturalisation or registration. Spouses of Caymanians and children born to Caymanian parents have separate specific routes.
Duration / Outcome
Permanent status once granted
Requirements
- โ20 years of continuous ordinary residence (standard โ increased from 15 years, effective May 1, 2026); OR 15 years if married to a Caymanian; OR 10 years after obtaining naturalisation/registration
- โPermanent Residence held for the relevant period
- โGood character and community integration
- โKnowledge of the Cayman Islands โ history, culture and institutions
- โApplication to the Caymanian Status and Permanent Residency Board
The Caymanian Protection Act (effective May 1, 2026) increased the standard RtbC residence from 15 to 20 years โ a significant change for long-term residents planning their timeline. Those married to a Caymanian qualify after 15 years; those who have obtained a naturalisation/registration certificate qualify after 10 years. The Right to be Caymanian is the highest status available in the islands short of birth entitlement. It is distinct from BOTC and British citizenship. Seek Cayman immigration legal advice before relying on any specific timeline.
Persons of Independent Means (Long-Term Residence Certificate)
Eligibility
High-net-worth foreign nationals who do not wish to work in Cayman but can demonstrate substantial financial self-sufficiency, qualifying property ownership or significant investment in the Cayman Islands may obtain a Long-Term Residence Certificate as a Person of Independent Means. This provides the right to reside without a work permit but does not confer Caymanian status.
Duration / Outcome
Long-term renewable certificate; does not directly confer PR or RtbC
Requirements
- โSubstantial proof of financial independence (income, assets and/or qualifying Cayman property or investment โ verify current thresholds with the Department of Immigration)
- โValid comprehensive private health insurance
- โClean criminal record from home country (apostilled)
- โApplication to the Cayman Islands Department of Immigration
The Persons of Independent Means route is popular with retirees, remote workers and investors who want long-term Cayman residence without employment. Residence time on this certificate may count toward future PR points accumulation. Confirm current income and property thresholds directly with the Department of Immigration as these are reviewed periodically.
๐ Dual Citizenship
โ
Dual citizenship is allowed โ UK nationality law permits dual citizenship โ BOTC holders and persons who register as full British Citizens (via Form B(OTA)) are not required to renounce other nationalities. Caymanian status also does not require renunciation. Your other country of citizenship may or may not permit dual nationality โ check before proceeding.
