Leaving Cayman Islands
How to properly exit — protecting your finances, rights and records.
📅 General Timeline
4 months before departure: inform your employer so they can plan the WORC permit-cancellation timeline; give school at least one term's written notice (most Cayman schools require a full term); start the pension-withdrawal application with your administrator; begin decluttering and booking a freight forwarder if shipping belongings. 3 months before: obtain written rental notice deadline and give notice in writing; get quotes for shipping containers or airfreight and calculate import-duty costs at your destination; begin medical consultations to secure prescription letters, referrals, and vaccination records; consult a US-qualified CPA if applicable about FBAR/FATCA and lump-sum pension tax. 2 months before: contact your bank about non-resident account terms or closure; begin utility cancellation notice periods for internet and mobile; list vehicle for sale (Cayman second-hand market moves quickly; budget 4–6 weeks to sell). 6 weeks before: service and transfer or export vehicle; confirm pension withdrawal timeline with administrator; do final medical and dental check-ups; request medical summary from GP. 1 month before: settle all outstanding government accounts (duty, licence, planning, vehicle); confirm employer has submitted WORC permit cancellation; pack and dispatch freight shipment; begin utility close-outs. Final week: conduct checkout inspection with timestamped photos and collect deposit-return confirmation; collect WORC cancellation letter from employer; update bank address, tax residency, and phone number; ensure all documents (permit cancellation, pension withdrawal receipt, final utility bills, deposit confirmation) are in your carry-on bag, not packed in freight. Depart via Owen Roberts International Airport (MCT) — allow extra time for documentation checks.
Deregistration
Work-permit cancellation is initiated by your employer at WORC — you cannot and should not attempt to cancel it yourself. Ask your employer for a copy of the WORC cancellation confirmation letter and keep it permanently in your records; you may need it to prove lawful departure status years later for any future Cayman immigration application. Once your permit is cancelled, you have 30 days to depart the territory or secure an alternative lawful immigration status (e.g., visitor entry or a new employer-sponsored permit). A multiple-entry visitor stamp does not entitle you to remain and work. If you hold a vehicle, notify DVDL and cancel your registration before departure to stop annual licence fees accruing. If you are a sole trader or company director, ensure your Trade and Business Licence is formally surrendered and any Cayman company is struck off by a licensed registered office or properly transferred before you leave — ongoing registered-office fees, annual returns, and CIMA obligations continue to accrue on active companies regardless of your physical absence, and uncollected debts can be pursued internationally.
Tax clearance
There is no personal income tax, capital-gains tax, or goods-and-services tax in the Cayman Islands, so there is no departure tax return or tax-clearance certificate to obtain for individuals. However, you must settle all outstanding government obligations before departure: unpaid import duty, stamp duty, Trade and Business Licence fees, company annual fees, planning permit fees, and vehicle licensing arrears can be pursued through the Cayman courts and, in appropriate cases, via international debt-recovery mechanisms. If you operated a CIMA-regulated entity, obtain formal regulatory closure confirmation. US citizens and US permanent residents are required to continue filing annual IRS returns (due April 15, extended to October 15 by extension) and FBAR/FinCEN 114 reports (due April 15) for any Cayman bank, brokerage, or fund accounts throughout the year of departure and subsequent years in which those accounts remain open, regardless of where you now reside — consult a US-qualified CPA before closing or transferring any Cayman account.
Pension portability
Under the National Pensions Law, eligible expatriate employees who are permanently departing the Cayman Islands may apply to withdraw their vested pension fund balance as a lump sum — this is a cash withdrawal, not a portability transfer to a foreign pension scheme as seen in EU portable-pensions frameworks. The process typically takes 8–16 weeks from application to fund release, so begin at least 3–4 months before your planned departure date. Contact your approved pension administrator (Fidelity National Information Services, Cayman National Trust, CIBC FirstCaribbean, or your employer's chosen administrator) and request the permanent-departure withdrawal form; you will need to provide your WORC permit-cancellation confirmation or equivalent evidence of permanent departure. Funds are released in KYD or USD by cheque or wire transfer after the administrator completes anti-money-laundering verification. Be aware that the withdrawn lump sum may be treated as taxable pension income in your new country of residence — the UK, Canada, Australia, and Ireland all tax foreign pension lump sums under their domestic rules — so take specific tax advice in your destination country before applying for the withdrawal.
Health insurance
Employer-provided health insurance in Cayman almost always terminates on the last day of employment or at the end of the calendar month in which employment ends, depending on the specific policy wording — confirm the exact end date in writing with your employer's HR or insurance administrator at least four weeks before your last day. Before your cover lapses, request a Certificate of Previous Insurance (or equivalent coverage history letter) from your insurer; this document can reduce or eliminate waiting periods with your next health insurer in your destination country, particularly for employer group plans in the UK, Canada, and Australia. Ask your GP for a full medical summary, any outstanding referral letters, and 90-day supplies of regular prescription medications if clinically appropriate. If your departure falls within hurricane season (June 1 – November 30), ensure your travel and transit insurance explicitly covers emergency medical treatment during travel disruption — standard travel insurance often excludes hurricane-related itinerary changes. Do not assume that your Cayman employer cover continues even one working day after your employment end date.
Bank account
Most major Cayman banks (Butterfield, Cayman National, CIBC FirstCaribbean, RBC) will allow accounts to remain open as non-resident accounts after departure, but they impose meaningfully stricter conditions: minimum balance requirements often of US$5,000–10,000 or more, enhanced annual AML/KYC documentation, updated CRS (Common Reporting Standard) and FATCA tax-residency declarations, and in some cases, monthly maintenance fees. You must update your bank with your new overseas address, your new tax-residency jurisdiction, and a working overseas phone number before you lose access to your Cayman mobile number — otherwise, SMS-based two-factor authentication will lock you out of online banking from abroad. Convert any KYD balances to USD or another freely tradeable currency before departing, as KYD is not accepted or convertible at banks outside the Cayman Islands. Formally close any accounts you do not intend to maintain — accounts left dormant without contact can eventually be escheated under the Cayman Unclaimed Monies Law, and recovery of escheated funds is a lengthy process.
Utilities
Cancel your CUC electricity account by visiting or calling the George Town CUC office (345-949-5200) with your final meter reading, your account number, and a forwarding address for the refund of any credit balance or deposit. The Water Authority of the Cayman Islands account can be cancelled in person or via written request; retain your final bill as evidence of the closing meter reading. Your internet provider (Flow or Logic) and mobile carrier (Flow or Digicel) require written notice of cancellation — both typically require 30 days' notice and may charge early-termination fees if you are within a contract period; cancel in writing via email and obtain written confirmation to avoid billing disputes after you have lost access to your Cayman contact details. If your apartment is in a strata complex, notify the strata management company separately to cancel any direct strata-fee payment arrangements and to obtain a clearance letter confirming no outstanding strata fines or maintenance charges — the landlord will require this for your deposit return. Keep all final utility bills, receipts, and cancellation confirmations for at least 12 months after departure.
Rental contract
Cayman residential leases typically require 1–2 months' written notice of departure — check your specific lease clause carefully, as the required period varies and some fixed-term leases impose a penalty (often one to two months' rent) for early termination before the agreed term ends. Give notice in writing — email to both the landlord and the property agent — and retain the acknowledgement. Arrange a formal checkout inspection with the landlord or agent, documenting condition with timestamped photographs or video of every room, all fixtures, every appliance, and all walls before and after moving your furniture out; these records are your primary evidence if a deposit dispute arises. Record your final utility meter readings at the inspection. Security deposits — almost always one month's rent, sometimes two — must be returned within a reasonable period after departure; if the landlord intends to make deductions, they must provide a written itemisation. If a deposit is withheld unreasonably, the Department of Labour and Pensions (DLP) can provide landlord-tenant dispute guidance, and small-claims action through the Grand Court is an accessible remedy for straightforward cases. Settle any lease obligations such as professional cleaning, pest control, or AC service specified in the lease before the checkout inspection to prevent dispute.
