Italy (IT)
Italy is a parliamentary republic of 20 regions stretching from the Alpine peaks of the Dolomites to the sun-baked coasts of Sicily and Sardinia, celebrated worldwide for its unparalleled Renaissance art and architecture, UNESCO-laden historic cities from Rome to Florence and Venice, world-defining cuisine and wines, passionate football culture, and a relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle that has drawn expats, artists, and retirees for centuries.
Recycling & Waste in Italy
Bin system, bottle deposits, special disposal, and common mistakes.
Italy's waste management system is called raccolta differenziata (source-separated collection). Italy has achieved 60%+ national recycling rates (2026) — above the EU average — with northern regions (Veneto, Friuli, Lombardy, Trentino) leading at 70–80% and southern regions (Campania, Sicily, Calabria) still lagging at 30–50%. Each Comune (municipality) organises its own collection with variations in bin colours, collection schedules, and acceptable materials — always check your specific municipality's rules. Most cities use door-to-door collection (raccolta porta a porta) for which households receive specific bags or bins per waste type. TARI (Tassa sui Rifiuti) is the annual waste collection tax paid to the Comune — based on household size and home surface area. Failure to separate correctly can result in fines from the Polizia Municipale (€25–1,000 depending on municipality).

Special Disposal
Farmacia (pharmacy) — specific collection bins (cassonetti farmaci). Never flush medicines.
All pharmacies in Italy are required to have medicine collection bins. Free.
Yellow "pile" bins at supermarkets, tabaccherie, electronics stores, and Comuni eco-centres (isola ecologica/ecocentro).
Separate from all other waste. Mandatory under DLgs 188/2008.
Ecocentro (civic amenity site — each Comune has at least one). Large electronics retailers (Unieuro, MediaWorld, Euronics) accept old devices when you purchase equivalent new ones (1:1 swap). Small RAEE (phones, cables) accepted at most electronics shops.
Light bulbs, TVs, computers, fridges, washing machines. Never in normal bins.
Auto repair shops (officine meccaniche) and petrol stations are required to accept used motor oil and tyres.
Illegal to dispose in domestic bins. Take to any garage or tyre dealer.
Ecocentro/isola ecologica or scheduled municipal collection (ritiro a domicilio). Book via Comune website or app.
Many municipalities offer free 1–2 annual home collections of ingombranti. Illegal dumping: €25–1,000 fine.
Ecocentro/isola ecologica only. Accepted by appointment or on specific opening days.
Oils, paints, thinners, garden chemicals. Never in any household bin.
Orange or yellow "indumenti usati" collection bins (typically from Caritas, Humana, Croce Rossa). Also: drop-off at clothing collection points in supermarket car parks.
Wearable items for reuse charity. Torn or soiled items: indifferenziato.
Ecocentro (small quantities — DIY). For large quantities: skip hire (autorizzo edilizio) from licensed waste contractors.
Never in domestic bins. Small quantities (< 1 m³): ecocentro free or nominal fee.
Bulk Waste
Ritiro a domicilio ingombranti: most Italian Comuni offer free collection of large items (furniture, mattresses, large appliances) from your doorstep 1–2 times per year by appointment. Book via your Comune's waste management website or dedicated apps (e.g. AMSA Milano for Milan, AMA for Rome). Second-hand platforms: Subito.it and Facebook Marketplace for reusable items. Caritas and Emmaus communities accept functional furniture donations.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ! Putting Tetra Pak (milk/juice cartons) in plastics — in most northern cities, they go in carta (paper). Check local rules.
- ! Putting receipt paper (scontrini) in carta — thermal receipt paper is non-recyclable, goes to indifferenziato.
- ! Putting pizza boxes in carta when heavily grease-soiled — remove the clean lid for carta, put the soiled base in organico.
- ! Using non-compostable bags for organico — use only certified compostable bags (sacchetti compostabili EN13432) where required.
- ! Putting ceramics in vetro — ceramics (ceramic plates, mugs) cannot be recycled with glass and go to indifferenziato.
- ! Putting broken glass in vetro without wrapping — wrap in newspaper and tape for safety; still goes in vetro.
- ! Putting cooking oil down the drain — collect in sealed bottles and take to ecocentro or check if your municipality has oil collection bins.
- ! Ignoring TARI registration — tenants must register for TARI with the Comune; landlords often pass this obligation to tenants via contract.
Fines & Enforcement
Fines for incorrect waste disposal (abbandono rifiuti or mancata raccolta differenziata) under DLgs 152/2006 (Codice dell'Ambiente) range from €25 to €1,000 for domestic violations, depending on severity and municipality. Illegal dumping (abbandono di rifiuti) is a criminal offence for large quantities: Art. 256 DLgs 152/2006 — fines €2,600–26,000 + imprisonment 3 months–2 years. Polizia Municipale and Carabinieri NOE (Nucleo Operativo Ecologico) enforce environmental regulations. Environmental wardens (guardie ecologiche volontarie — GEV) in many cities issue fines for domestic violations.
Practical Tips
- → Check your Comune's official website for the exact raccolta differenziata calendar — collection days vary by waste type and neighbourhood.
- → Download your city's waste app: AMSA Milan (ORA), AMA Roma, AMIU Genova, RAP Palermo — shows collection calendars and bin guides.
- → The app "differenziata.it" lets you scan product barcodes to find the correct bin in your municipality.
- → Bins placed outside at the wrong time (not the evening before or morning of collection): Polizia Municipale can fine in many cities.
- → In southern Italy: waste collection infrastructure is improving but remains less reliable than the north. Consider reporting non-collection via the municipal app.
- → If you live in a condominio: the condomino administrator (amministratore) organises the shared bins — coordinate with them for correct placement and replacement of communal bins.
