Liechtenstein (LI)
Liechtenstein is a tiny constitutional principality nestled between Switzerland and Austria — one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world — yet it punches far above its 39,000-person weight as one of the wealthiest nations on earth per capita.
Healthcare in Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein operates a Swiss-style mandatory private health insurance system (Krankenkasse). Unlike most European countries, there is no state-run health insurer — all residents must purchase private health insurance from approved Krankenkasse providers under the Liechtensteinisches Gesundheitsversicherungsgesetz (LGV). In practice, the system functions like Switzerland's KVG/LAMal — all approved insurers must offer a standardised basic package (Grundversicherung) at regulated benefit levels, with competition on premiums. This means high-quality universal coverage without a state monopoly. The Landesspital Vaduz is the principal hospital; complex specialist care often uses Swiss or Austrian hospitals.
Excellent — comparable to Switzerland, consistently among Europe's top 5 healthcare systems in quality metrics.
Public healthcare: Krankenkasse (Obligatorische Krankenpflegeversicherung / OKP)

- Prescribed medications on the approved drug list (Spezialitätenliste)

- Cosmetic procedures
- Alternative medicine (acupuncture, homeopathy, etc.) — only in supplementary insurance

Accessing care
Every resident selects a Hausarzt (GP/family doctor) who acts as the primary care provider and gatekeeper for specialist referrals. The GP is not assigned — you choose freely from registered physicians. Under the free choice of doctor system, you can visit any GP or specialist without referral at the standard copayment, but some managed care models (HMO/Telmed/Hausarztmodell) require referral routing in exchange for premium discounts.
Referral from your Hausarzt is standard for specialist treatment. Some specialties accept direct patient contact (ophthalmology, dermatology, gynaecology, dentistry). Specialists must be approved by your Krankenkasse. Cross-border specialist referrals to Switzerland and Austria are common for services not available in Liechtenstein.
Emergency: call 112 or 144 (ambulance). Nearest emergency departments: Landesspital Vaduz (Liechtenstein's own hospital — full emergency department); for major trauma: Kantonsspital Grabs (Switzerland, 20 minutes) or LKH Feldkirch (Austria, 15 minutes). All emergency care is covered by Krankenkasse (emergency abroad covered within EEA).
Out-of-hours medical service (Ärztlicher Notfalldienst): call +423 230 30 30 or check notfalldienst.li for the duty doctor. The duty doctor (Notfallarzt) covers evenings and weekends. Contact information posted in GP practice windows and on the Landesspital website. Minor emergencies: Notfallambulanz at Landesspital Vaduz (open 24/7). The Swiss model of triage-by-phone before in-person visit applies.
GP issues electronic prescriptions (eRezept) or paper Rezept. Collect at any registered Apotheke in Liechtenstein. Prescription drugs on the Spezialitätenliste are covered after franchise/copay. Non-listed drugs are out-of-pocket. Swiss pharmacies across the border also dispense Liechtenstein prescriptions in many cases.
Adult dental care (Zahnmedizin) is almost entirely out-of-pocket — the basic Grundversicherung covers only emergency dental treatment for accident injuries or specific systemic diseases. A routine check-up: CHF 100–200; filling: CHF 200–400; crown: CHF 1,500–2,500. Strongly recommended: purchase dental Zusatzversicherung immediately upon arrival. Children's dental care is partially subsidised. Kieferorthopädie (orthodontics): partially covered for children.
Psychiatric and psychological care is covered by Krankenkasse after GP referral. The Liechtensteinische Psychiatrie (LiPs) provides inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services. For psychological therapy: GP refers to approved Psychotherapeut — limited sessions covered annually. Private psychotherapy: CHF 160–250/session not covered without supplementary insurance. Waiting times for public mental health: 4–12 weeks.
Maternity care (Schwangerschaft und Geburt) is fully covered with no deductible or copay. Antenatal care: Gynäkologe (obstetrician/gynaecologist) throughout pregnancy. Birth: Landesspital Vaduz (Geburtenabteilung) or Swiss/Austrian hospitals. Post-natal follow-up covered. Hebamme (midwife) home visits after birth — covered. Paid maternity leave separate from healthcare — see familyRights.
Expat-specific advice
- Arrange Krankenkasse BEFORE or immediately upon arriving — coverage must start within 3 months of residence and is required for the Ausländer- und Passamt residence permit application.
- Compare premiums and franchise options from multiple approved Krankenkasse providers — premiums differ by up to 20% between providers for the same coverage.
- Choose your Franchise (deductible) carefully — higher franchise = lower monthly premium. If you are healthy, CHF 1,500–2,500 franchise may save CHF 100–150/month.
- Immediately add dental Zusatzversicherung (supplementary dental insurance) — adult dental costs are a major expense.
- Register with a local Hausarzt (GP) — you can visit the Landesspital Vaduz Ambulatorium initially if you haven't yet found a GP.
Pharmacies (Apotheke)

- Ibuprofen / Algifor (CHF 10–25)

- Throat lozenges (CHF 8–15)
- Nasal spray / decongestants (CHF 12–20)

- Oral rehydration salts (CHF 8–15)
