AMS Liechtenstein

Register in person at the AMS office in Schaan within 3 days of becoming unemployed. Bring: Ausländerausweis, employment contract, payslips, and dismissal letter. Register online at ams.llv.li for initial contact. Regular reporting (Meldepflicht) required — typically every 2–4 weeks.

Expat eligibility: All legal residents with valid Ausländerausweis who have paid ALV contributions for at least 12 months within the past 2 years are eligible for unemployment benefits. Grenzgänger (cross-border workers) who lose their job in Liechtenstein apply for unemployment benefits in their country of residence (Austria or Switzerland), not at the Liechtenstein AMS. EEA nationals with residence rights are fully eligible.

💼 Work Permits

EU Citizens

EEA/EU citizens DO NOT have unrestricted right of residence and work in Liechtenstein — this is Liechtenstein's most important distinction from other EEA countries. An annual quota of new residence permits is capped by law. EEA workers must apply for a Grenzgänger permit (if commuting from Austria or Switzerland) or a residence permit quota allocation at the Ausländer- und Passamt. The Grenzgänger route (daily commute) is much easier to obtain than full residence. Full EEA residence permits require quota availability — waiting lists exist and can take years.

Non-EU Citizens

Non-EEA nationals face even stricter quota limitations for both residence and work permits. A work permit must be approved by the Ausländer- und Passamt before arrival. Employer sponsorship is essential. The number of new non-EEA permits is extremely small annually. Non-EEA nationals with existing Swiss or Austrian residence permits may have different rights under bilateral agreements. Liechtenstein is one of the most difficult EEA countries to immigrate to as a non-EEA national.

EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card is NOT applicable in Liechtenstein — Liechtenstein is not an EU member state. There is no equivalent Blue Card scheme. High-skilled workers from outside the EEA must qualify under the standard quota system for non-EEA nationals.

Freelancer Visa

No specific freelancer visa exists. Self-employed residence requires demonstrating genuine economic activity benefiting Liechtenstein and quota availability. The Ausländer- und Passamt evaluates each case individually. Self-employed EEA nationals still need quota allocation.

Typical hours 40–42 hours per week standard. Many technical and manufacturing roles have fixed shift patterns. Office hours: typically 07:30–17:00 or 08:00–17:30 with a lunch break. Overtime in manufacturing and private banking is common.

Annual leave Minimum 20 days per year (4 weeks) by law. Most employers provide 25 days. Senior roles and long-tenure employees often receive 30 days.

Sick leave First three months: full salary paid by employer. After 3 months of tenure: entitlement scales up to several months depending on tenure. Employer health insurance (Krankentaggeld) covers continued salary — check your employment contract. Doctor's note (Arztzeugnis) required from day 1 for most employers.

Trial period Standard probation period: 1 month (often extended to 3 months by agreement). During probation: 7 days notice on either side.

Notice period First year: 1 month. Year 2–9: 2 months. 10+ years: 3 months. Notice periods calculated to end of month. Immediate dismissal (fristlose Kündigung) only for serious cause.

Salary range CHF 70,000–120,000/year for professional roles; CHF 120,000–300,000+ for senior management and private banking. Manufacturing/technical: CHF 55,000–85,000. Liechtenstein salaries are broadly comparable to Switzerland — among the highest in Europe.

Pay frequency Monthly (monatlich). Salary paid on the last working day of the month or the 25th. A 13th month salary (13. Monatslohn) is standard in most employment contracts.
