Eligibility
Foreign nationals who have legally resided in Morocco for 5+ continuous years on annual Carte de Séjour. Must demonstrate stable income, absence of criminal convictions, and continuing ties to Morocco.

Morocco does not have a formal permanent residency status equivalent to Germany's Niederlassungserlaubnis or France's carte de résident. However, long-term residents can apply for multi-year permits (pluriannuelles) that reduce annual renewal requirements. In practice, many long-term expats simply renew annually without problems. The Moroccan administration is working on modernising the residence permit system — check with préfecture for latest procedures. Some expats obtain 3-year permits after 5 years; 5-year permits reported in some préfectures after 10+ years.

Moroccan law (Dahir of 6 September 1958 on nationality) requires renunciation of foreign citizenship upon naturalisation for non-Moroccans. However, Morocco does NOT recognise renunciation of Moroccan citizenship for those who are Moroccan by birth or descent — Moroccans by birth retain Moroccan nationality regardless of other citizenships acquired. Naturalisation is extremely rare and difficult for Western expats — the process is heavily discretionary and can take many years. Most expats maintain their annual Carte de Séjour, which is renewable indefinitely, rather than pursuing citizenship. Children born in Morocco to non-Moroccan parents do not acquire Moroccan citizenship by birth (jus soli does not apply). No digital nomad visa exists in Morocco as of 2026; investor long-term residence is possible via business establishment (initial annual permit, extendable; 10-year permits available after several years of continuous business activity).

Morocco follows jus sanguinis (bloodline citizenship). Children of Moroccan fathers are automatically Moroccan by descent regardless of where born. Children of Moroccan mothers (since 2007 amendment) can also acquire Moroccan nationality by descent. Many Moroccans in the diaspora maintain dual nationality through descent — this is legally permitted and common.

Dual citizenship is not allowed — Morocco generally requires renunciation of foreign citizenship upon naturalisation for non-Moroccan nationals. However, this is the key exception: Moroccans by birth or descent who acquire a second citizenship abroad are NOT required by Morocco to renounce Moroccan nationality — Morocco does not recognise such renunciations and continues to consider them Moroccan. This creates a de facto dual nationality situation for the Moroccan diaspora. For Western expats naturalising as Moroccan: renunciation of original nationality is formally required by Moroccan law. In practice, whether Morocco can enforce this against your home country depends on whether your home country allows retention of their citizenship after foreign naturalisation (e.g., France allows it in some cases; USA allows dual nationality).
