Peru (PE)
Peru combines world-class food, ancient Inca heritage, Pacific coastline, Amazon rainforest, Andean cities and one of Latin America's lower cost-of-living profiles.
Qualification Recognition
Getting your foreign credentials recognised in Peru.
Foreign degrees are useful for employment in Peru but regulated professions require formal recognition, revalidation, and/or registration with the relevant colegio profesional before lawful independent practice. Recognition is administered by SUNEDU (Superintendencia Nacional de Educación Superior Universitaria — sunedu.gob.pe), which can either directly recognise a foreign degree or refer the applicant to a Peruvian university for revalidation. Peru joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2010. SUNEDU may waive the apostille requirement if it can verify the degree directly through foreign university databases.
Regulated Professions
Process: Step 1: Obtain apostille on original degree and transcript from home country (Hague members) or consular legalisation (non-Hague). Step 2: Obtain certified Spanish translation (traductor colegiado o juramentado). Step 3: Apply to SUNEDU for recognition (sunedu.gob.pe) with required documents and pay fee S/. 1,188.50 (reduced to S/. 594.25 for returned migrants with valid Carnet de Migrante Retornado — rate in force since December 2024 per RCD 041-2024-SUNEDU-CD). SUNEDU evaluates within 30 working days. If recognition is denied or the programme is not in SUNEDU's database, apply to an authorised Peruvian university for revalidation. Step 4: After SUNEDU recognition, register with the relevant colegio profesional (medical, engineering, bar, etc.) to obtain the right to practise. Work permit is separate.
Authority: SUNEDU (sunedu.gob.pe) for recognition of foreign higher-education degrees. Authorised Peruvian universities for revalidation. Relevant colegio profesional (Colegio Médico del Perú, Colegio de Ingenieros del Perú, Colegio de Abogados, etc.) for professional registration.
Timeline: 2–12 months depending on profession and document quality. SUNEDU statutory deadline: 30 working days from complete application. Revalidation through a university: 3–6 additional months. Professional college registration: 1–2 months.
Cost: SUNEDU recognition fee: S/. 1,188.50 (reduced to S/. 594.25 for returned migrants with valid Carnet de Migrante Retornado — in force since December 2024 per RCD 041-2024-SUNEDU-CD; payable via Scotiabank, Interbank, or Banco de la Nación). Apostille fees vary by country. Certified Spanish translation: S/. 50–200 per page. University revalidation fees (if required): varies by institution. Total typical outlay: S/. 2,000–6,000+.
Academic Degrees
Authority: SUNEDU (Superintendencia Nacional de Educación Superior Universitaria) — sunedu.gob.pe — is the Peruvian national authority for recognition and registration of foreign higher-education degrees.
Process: Submit to SUNEDU: apostilled (or legalised) original diploma and transcripts, certified Spanish translation, identity document (passport or alien card), and completed application form with fee S/. 1,188.50 (S/. 594.25 for returned migrants). SUNEDU may dispense with the apostille requirement if it can verify degree authenticity through the foreign university's official database. Processing: up to 30 working days. If SUNEDU cannot process directly, applicant is referred to a licensed Peruvian university for revalidación.
Equivalency service: SUNEDU — sunedu.gob.pe/procedimiento-de-reconocimiento-de-grados-y-titulos-extranjeros — Recognition of foreign degrees (Reconocimiento de Grados y Títulos Extranjeros). Fee: S/. 1,188.50 (S/. 594.25 for returned migrants; in force December 2024). Processing: 30 working days. Degree verification also available via QR code on the MINEDU/SUNEDU platforms for publicly registered Peruvian degrees.
Document Rules
Apostille: Peru is a Hague Apostille Convention member (acceded 13 January 2010; Convention in force for Peru). Foreign public documents (degrees, transcripts, birth certificates) from Hague-member countries must bear an apostille. Note: SUNEDU may waive the apostille requirement if it can verify the degree directly through the issuing university's official online database.
Legalisation: Documents from non-Hague countries require full consular legalisation: authentication by home country Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then Peruvian Embassy or Consulate attestation in that country, followed by Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (RREE) legalisation in Lima.
Sworn translation: All non-Spanish documents must be accompanied by a certified Spanish translation. Confirm whether the receiving body (SUNEDU, university, professional college, court) requires a colegiado (registered professional translator) or juramentado (sworn translator) — requirements vary. Ask before commissioning the translation.

University revalidation (if required): 3–6 months additional. Professional colegio registration: 1–2 months. Full pathway for regulated professions (medicine, law, engineering): typically 6–12 months from initial document collection.
Do not advertise yourself as a licensed local professional or sign off on regulated professional work until the colegio profesional confirms your right to practise in Peru. For engineering: the Consejo Nacional de Decanos de los Colegios Profesionales del Perú (CONREDE) and the Colegio de Ingenieros del Perú (CIP) govern engineering registration.
