Banking in South Korea

Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.

South Korea's banking sector is regulated by the Financial Services Commission (FSC) and Financial Supervisory Service (FSS). The five major commercial banks — KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Hana, Woori, and NH NongHyup — dominate the market. All accounts use real-name verification (실명확인) tied to your ARC (Alien Registration Card), which must be obtained within 90 days of arrival on most long-term visas (E-series, F-series, D-series). Hana Bank, Shinhan Bank, and Woori Bank offer limited passport-only accounts for new arrivals before ARC issuance. Mobile banking apps now provide accessible English-language services at the major banks. KakaoPay, Samsung Pay, and Naver Pay dominate digital payments; T-money transit card is essential for daily life. The Korean Won (KRW) is the currency. NICE Score and KCB Score (Korea Credit Bureau) are the two primary credit scoring systems used by Korean lenders.

Payment culture

South Korea is one of the world's most advanced digital payments societies. Samsung Pay dominates contactless in-person payments via MST (magnetic stripe emulation) technology — accepted even at older card terminals that do not support NFC. KakaoPay (QR and app-based) is ubiquitous for peer-to-peer transfers and merchant payments. Naver Pay dominates online shopping and delivery app payments. T-money (티머니) transit card is essential — loaded at GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, and Emart24 convenience stores; used on Seoul Metro, buses nationwide, and for small purchases at convenience stores. Zero Pay (제로페이) is a government-backed QR payment scheme offering VAT benefit incentives at small businesses. Credit cards (신용카드) are accepted virtually everywhere; Korean domestic card networks (BC Card, Lotte Card, Hyundai Card, Shinhan Card) are widely used alongside Visa and Mastercard. Cash (현금) is used at some traditional markets (재래시장) and older establishments — carry KRW 20,000–50,000 for these situations.

Cash access

ATMs are available 24/7 at convenience stores (GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, Emart24) across Korea — most accept international Visa and Mastercard. Convenience-store ATMs charge KRW 500–900 per withdrawal during business hours and KRW 800–1,200 outside business hours. Bank branch ATMs (은행 ATM): free for own-bank cards; KRW 500–900 fee for other-bank cards. Global ATMs accepting foreign cards widely available at Incheon Airport, Gimpo Airport, and major city branches. Carrying KRW 50,000–100,000 in cash for traditional markets (재래시장), cash-only situations, and rural areas is recommended.

NICE / KCB credit scores

NICE Score: check free at nicepay.co.kr or via Toss, KakaoBank, KakaoPay, or most major banking apps after Korean identity verification. KCB Score (올크레딧): check free at allcredit.co.kr. Both scores range 1–1000 — above 700 is considered good; banks typically require 650+ for credit card approval.

Free annual check: Free monthly NICE and KCB score checks available via Toss, KakaoBank, and Naver Pay apps — no restriction on frequency for basic score access. Full credit report (신용보고서) also available for free at allcredit.co.kr.

New foreign arrivals have no Korean credit history — this is not the same as a bad credit score, but lenders treat thin-file applicants conservatively. Build credit by: maintaining a Korean bank account with regular salary deposits; obtaining a secured credit card (담보카드) from your primary bank; paying all bills, rent, and telecoms on time. Avoid multiple simultaneous credit applications. Most banks consider a 6–12 month track record of salary crediting before approving unsecured credit cards for foreign nationals.

International transfers

Wise is the most cost-effective option for sending KRW internationally — typically 0.5–1.5% fee at the mid-market rate; significantly cheaper than Korean bank SWIFT fees of KRW 5,000–15,000 per wire plus 1–2% FX spread. Woori WiBee provides competitive remittance rates for Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, and China. Korean banks offer SWIFT international wires — SWIFT BIC codes: Hana HNBNKRSE, Shinhan SHBKKRSE, KB Kookmin CZNBKRSE, Woori HVBKKRSE. Korean foreign exchange regulations (외국환거래법) require source-of-funds documentation for outbound transfers above KRW 10 million equivalent — have salary slips or bank statements ready. For business transfers, Korean banks' trade finance teams handle formal FX reporting requirements.
