NHIS and NPS gaps during job changes can trigger arrears and visa issues
When changing employers in South Korea, there is often a gap in National Health Insurance (NHIS) and National Pension Service (NPS) coverage. If you shift from employer-enrolled (직장가입자) to regional-enrolled (지역가입자), your NHIS premium is calculated on income and assets — often significantly higher. Arrears from gaps or premium jumps can appear on your record and are increasingly checked during ARC renewals and visa extensions in 2026.
⚡ Unpaid NHIS/NPS arrears delay ARC renewal and visa extensions. Regional NHIS premiums can be 2–3× higher than workplace premiums for the same income level. Immigration is cross-checking insurance compliance records as of 2025–2026.
✅ When changing jobs, enrol with the new employer's NHIS/NPS from day 1. If between jobs, proactively register as regionally enrolled at your nearest NHIS office (건강보험공단) — do not wait for a bill to arrive. Keep NHIS receipts as proof of continuous coverage.
2026 minimum wage is 10,320 KRW/hour

⚡ Missed appointments and wrong routes.
✅ Install both before arrival.
Large marts close on local mandatory days
E-Mart, Homeplus and Lotte Mart often close two Sundays/month by district.
⚡ Empty fridge surprise.
✅ Check store page before grocery runs.
School and hagwon costs can surprise families
Education add-ons are expensive and culturally intense.
⚡ Budget strain.
✅ Budget hagwon/international school before choosing housing.
Tertiary hospitals may require referral paperwork
Big hospitals can be more expensive without referral/coverage path.
⚡ Higher co-pays and appointment delays.
✅ Start at local clinic unless emergency.
A child born in Korea does not automatically get Korean citizenship
Korea generally follows nationality by parentage, not birthplace.
⚡ Wrong assumptions about child status.
✅ Register birth with embassy and immigration promptly.
2026 minimum wage is 10,320 KRW per hour — verify your payslip is compliant
South Korea's minimum wage for 2026 is 10,320 KRW per hour, effective January 1, 2026 — a 2.9% increase from 10,030 KRW in 2025. Monthly minimum (based on 209 hours): 2,156,880 KRW. All workers in Korea including foreign nationals are protected by minimum wage law regardless of visa type. If you are on a fixed salary, verify the hourly equivalent exceeds the minimum, especially for jobs with long but unrecorded overtime hours.
⚡ Employers paying below minimum wage commit a criminal offence (penalty up to 2 years imprisonment or 20 million KRW fine). Workers can claim back underpaid wages via MOEL (Ministry of Employment and Labour — 1350 hotline) with no time limit if records exist.
✅ Check your payslip: monthly base pay ÷ 209 hours must equal or exceed 10,320 KRW (for 2026). File complaints at MOEL 1350 (English supported) or via e-Labour (e-노동포털) if underpaid.
Foreign workers can elect a 19% flat income tax rate instead of progressive rates
Qualifying foreign employees in South Korea can elect to pay a flat 19% national income tax rate on total earned income instead of the progressive rate (6–45%). This option is advantageous for high earners and remains available under 2026 tax rules. The flat tax election must be applied for at the time of year-end tax settlement (연말정산) in January–February. Local income tax (approximately 1.9% additional) applies on top of the 19% rate.
⚡ Missing the flat tax election can mean overpaying progressive tax. Conversely, lower earners may pay more under flat tax than progressive — calculate both scenarios annually.
✅ Discuss with your employer's HR or payroll team during January연말정산 season. Compare your estimated progressive rate against the 19% flat rate. The election is annual — you can change your choice each year. Use Korea's Hometax (홈택스) calculator or consult a certified tax accountant (세무사).
2026 Korean public holidays include several weekday bridge days — plan travel early
South Korea observes 16 public holidays in 2026. Key dates: New Year's Day (January 1), Lunar New Year holiday (January 28–30), Independence Movement Day (March 1), Children's Day (May 5), Buddha's Birthday (May 24), Memorial Day (June 6), Liberation Day (August 15), Chuseok holiday (approximately October 5–7), National Foundation Day (October 3), Hangul Day (October 9), and Christmas (December 25). When holidays fall on weekends, substitute weekdays are granted — check the official 2026 calendar from the Ministry of Employment and Labour.
⚡ Failing to account for public holidays leads to missed deadlines, closed government offices (immigration offices closed on holidays), school schedule disruptions, and expensive last-minute travel during Chuseok and Lunar New Year (peak travel periods).
✅ Download the 2026 Korean public holiday calendar from the Ministry of Employment and Labour website (moel.go.kr). Book Chuseok and Lunar New Year travel 2–3 months in advance — KTX and flights sell out. Immigration offices have reduced hours around major holidays.
Spring yellow dust and winter fine dust cause dangerously high PM2.5 — wear KF94 masks on bad days
South Korea experiences two overlapping air quality crises. Yellow dust (황사/hwangsa): March–May, mineral dust originating in the Gobi Desert/Mongolia transported by westerly winds, combined with Chinese industrial pollutants en route. PM10 and PM2.5 spike dramatically during hwangsa events — visibility drops to <1km and outdoor activity becomes hazardous. Fine dust (미세먼지): year-round but worst November–March, driven by domestic coal power plant emissions, vehicle exhaust, and seasonal heating, combined with transboundary pollution from China. During severe episodes, Seoul PM2.5 regularly reaches 75–150 μg/m³ — 5–10× the WHO daily guideline of 15 μg/m³. South Korea's Air Korea (airkorea.or.kr) grades air quality: 좋음 (Good, PM2.5 <15), 보통 (Moderate, 15–35), 나쁨 (Bad, 35–75), 매우나쁨 (Very Bad, 75+). Children, elderly, pregnant women, and those with asthma or cardiovascular disease face the highest risk.
⚡ Prolonged exposure to Seoul's winter and spring PM2.5 levels is associated with increased respiratory illness, cardiovascular events, and long-term lung function decline. Children's school outdoor play is cancelled by Seoul schools when PM2.5 is 나쁨 or above — expect this routinely in March–May.
✅ Install the AirKorea (에어코리아) app or use Naver Weather for real-time AQI. On 나쁨 or 매우나쁨 days: wear a KF94 mask outdoors — widely available at all pharmacies and convenience stores for approximately ₩1,000–3,000 each. Keep children and vulnerable family members indoors. Run a HEPA air purifier at home — 공기청정기 are standard household appliances in Korean homes and a priority purchase on arrival. Close windows on bad air days. Schedule outdoor exercise for early morning when pollution is typically lower.
