EU Citizens

EU citizens have no automatic labour-market access in Korea. They need the same visa/status permission as other non-Koreans.

Non-EU Citizens

Work requires an appropriate visa/status such as E-2 teaching, E-7 specially designated activities, D-8 investment, D-10 job seeking, F-series residence or other category tied to the role.

EU Blue Card

Korea has no EU Blue Card. Comparable skilled categories include E-7, D-8 and F-2 points-based residence for qualifying applicants.

Freelancer Visa

There is no simple open freelance visa. Some F-series statuses allow broad work; E-7 and D-8 are activity-specific and side work needs permission.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours Legal standard is 40 hours plus up to 12 overtime hours weekly under the 52-hour cap (applicable to companies with 5+ employees). The 52-hour week is enforced by MOEL inspection in 2026 — overtime time-tracking records are regularly audited. Startups and smaller companies sometimes operate outside these limits; document any excess overtime.

Annual leave 15 days paid annual leave after one year for full-time employees, increasing with tenure; newer workers accrue monthly leave (1 day per month in first year = 11 days).

Sick leave No universal statutory paid sick-leave entitlement in the Labor Standards Act; company policy, annual leave and national health benefits fill gaps. Employment insurance sick pay (상병급여) is available for serious illness after 4 days — check eligibility with MOEL.

Trial period Probation commonly 3 months. Minimum-wage reductions are narrowly limited and not automatic. 2026 minimum wage: 10,320 KRW/hour — applies during probation.

Notice period Employers generally owe 30 days notice or pay in lieu for dismissal after qualifying service.

Salary range 2026 benchmarks: Entry office roles 32–48M KRW/year; experienced tech/finance 60–130M+ KRW/year; E-2 English teaching 2.3–3.2M KRW/month plus housing and airfare benefits depending on employer. TOPIK 5–6 proficiency can add 20–30% to Korean-language-required role salaries.

Pay frequency Monthly payroll is standard, with year-end tax settlement (연말정산) in January/February 2027 for 2026 income.
