Payment Culture
Predominantly cash. Cards accepted at upscale hotels, tourist restaurants, and malls, but cash is required for souks, markets, taxis, and most local transactions. Always carry DT notes. Contactless payments are rare outside large cities.
ATM Tips
ATMs (Distributeurs Automatiques) widely available in cities and tourist areas. Daily withdrawal limits typically DT 400–800. Best rates at BIAT, Amen Bank, and STB ATMs. Foreign cards incur a fee of DT 3–8 per withdrawal. Stock up on cash before holidays and Ramadan.
Exchange Tips
TND is a non-convertible currency — officially you may only export 5,000 TND per trip. Exchange at official bureaux de change (banks, official changers) only. Black market exchange is illegal and risky. Exchange rate 2026: approximately DT 3.05–3.25 per USD; DT 3.30–3.50 per EUR. Keep receipts — required when departing with TND.
