OPCO (Office de la Protection de l'Enfance) operates subsidised roudhas for low-income families. Private jardins d'enfants range from basic to bilingual French-Arabic programmes. Quality varies significantly — visit before enrolling.

For private jardins d'enfants: contact directly, provide birth certificate and vaccination record. For OPCO centres: apply through the local délégation MFFE (Ministry of Women, Family, and Children).

⏱️ Popular private roudhas in Tunis residential areas (Lac, Menzah, Manar) fill quickly — register 3–6 months in advance for September intake.

State-provided crèche facilities are extremely limited. Most families rely on private crèches or family arrangements. Expats in central Tunis will find French-Arabic bilingual options in La Marsa, Menzah, and Lac areas.

Primary Free

École primaire (Madrassa Ibtidaiya)

Ages: 6–12 years (6 years of primary) · Language: Arabic (primary language of instruction). French introduced from Grade 2.

Register at the local public school in your district. Bring: birth certificate (with Arabic translation), proof of residence, vaccination record, and passport. Expat children are accepted in public schools; French and Arabic language support is variable.

Public primary education is compulsory and free. Quality varies significantly between governorates. Most expats choose French Mission (AEFE) schools, bilingual private schools, or international schools for their children. Public school culture is structured and discipline-oriented.

Secondary Free

Collège (7e–9e) + Lycée (10e–13e bac)

Ages: 12–18 years · Language: Arabic primary; French as key subject and language of instruction for sciences and maths.

Automatic progression from primary. New arrivals: apply to local collège or lycée with transcripts, birth certificate, and previous school records. Official translated transcripts required for entry assessment.

The Tunisian baccalauréat (bac) at age 18 is recognised for entry to North African and French universities. Sciences, maths, and technology streams are strong. Expat families may prefer French Mission lycées (AEFE) for bac français (accredited), or ISC/ACST for IB or American curriculum.

International Schools

Tunis has several high-quality international school options: (1) ACST (American Cooperative School of Tunis) in Lac area — American curriculum, PK–Grade 12, USD 8,000–18,000/year. (2) ISC (International School of Carthage) in Gammarth — IB curriculum, trilingual (English/French/Arabic), DT 12,000–25,000/year. (3) French Mission schools (AEFE-accredited) — Lycée Pierre de Coubertin, Lycée Gustave Flaubert in Tunis — French national curriculum (bac français), EU-accredited, DT 8,000–18,000/year, priority enrolment for French nationals. (4) EAB (École Active Bilingue) and other bilingual private schools — French-Arabic, lower cost, good quality. Enquire via the Tunis French Embassy or school websites for current fees and availability.

University

Tuition fee

Free for Tunisian nationals at state universities. Foreign students pay DT 1,500–4,500/year at public universities. Private universities: DT 5,000–15,000/year. Notable institutions: Université de Tunis El Manar (sciences, medicine), Université Carthage (business, engineering), Université des Lettres (arts, languages). IHEC (Institut des Hautes Études Commerciales) is the flagship business school.

Semester fee

DT 200–600/year (state universities). Includes basic student services. No integrated semester transport pass — public transport must be arranged independently.

Student visa

Non-Tunisian students require a student visa (visa étudiant) and Titre de Séjour pour études. Issued by DGPC on presentation of university acceptance letter, proof of financial support, and accommodation. Apply at the Tunisian embassy in your home country at least 3 months before term start.

Health insurance

Tunisian students are covered by CNAM via CNSS contributions. Foreign students should arrange private health insurance or international student insurance before arrival. Limited student health services at university campuses — most students use private clinics.

Application process

Foreign students apply through the International Cooperation Office (DGRS — Direction Générale de la Recherche Scientifique) or directly to private universities. Arabic or French language proficiency typically required. Applications: April–July for September intake.

The most prestigious and affordable Arabic language school in North Africa. Offers Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), Tunisian Arabic (Darija), and French. Extremely popular with expats. Located in central Tunis (Avenue de Carthage). Register early — classes fill quickly.

Institut Français de Tunisie (IFT)

Provider: Institut Français de Tunisie (French government cultural institute) · Duration: 10–15 week sessions · Levels: A1 to C2

DT 400–900 per course (French courses). DELF/DALF exam: DT 150–250.

Provides French language courses and official DELF/DALF certification. Also offers cultural events, library, and networking opportunities for Francophone expats. Branches in Tunis, Sousse, Sfax, Bizerte.

Alliance Française de Tunis

Provider: Alliance Française (international French language network) · Duration: 8–12 week sessions · Levels: A1 to C2

DT 350–800 per session

French language courses and official DELF/DALF certification. Active cultural programme — film screenings, exhibitions, concerts. Useful for networking with French-speaking expats and Tunisian professionals.

Private Arabic tutors (Darija)

Tunisian Arabic (Darija) is distinct from MSA and not formally taught at most institutions. Private tutors found via Tunis Expats Facebook group, Preply, or word of mouth are the most practical route to conversational Darija for daily life.
