👶 Childcare & Kindergarten
State-run kreş (run by municipalities or Ministry of National Education) are heavily subsidised and income-tested. Demand far exceeds supply — waiting lists are long. Private kreş vary enormously in quality and price.
For state nurseries: apply at Milli Eğitim Müdürlüğü (district education office). For private: direct application to each nursery. Both require: birth certificate, vaccination record (aşı kartı), residence documentation.
Free in state primary schools. Age 5 (one year before primary school) is compulsory early education (okul öncesi zorunlu eğitim) since 2022. Private kindergartens charge significantly — quality international pre-schools in Istanbul can be TRY 20,000–50,000/month.
State: automatic enrollment at local primary school. Private: direct application. Documents: nüfus cüzdanı (birth certificate/ID), vaccination record, residence proof.
🏫 Schools
Enrollment through the local Milli Eğitim Müdürlüğü (district National Education Directorate) based on address. Children must register by August before the September start. Required documents: nüfus kayıt belgesi (birth/ID document), vaccination record, address proof. Foreign children of residents can enroll — school may request YKN or residence documents. Turkish public school curriculum is standardised nationally.
After primary school, placement in middle school (ortaokul) by address. High school (lise) entry: via centralised LGS exam (Liselere Geçiş Sıstemi) at end of 8th grade — results determine access to Anadolu Lisesi (enhanced curriculum), Science High Schools (Fen Lisesi), or regular lise. International students: contact Milli Eğitim Müdürlüğü for placement.
🌍 International Schools
Istanbul has a wide range of international schools offering IB, British, American, German, French, Italian, Japanese, and other curricula. Key schools: Robert College (prestigious American, competitive admission), Üsküdar American Academy, Bilkent University Laboratory and Primary School, MEF International Schools, British Istanbul Schools (BIS), Koç School, and various ÖZEL (private) schools with English-medium instruction. Fees range from TRY 100,000–500,000+/year (approximately €2,800–14,000) for local international schools; expatriate-targeted international schools can reach TRY 700,000–1,500,000/year. Ankara has the British Embassy School, Ankara International School (AIS), and others. Izmir: TED Izmir and a few international options. Most international school communities have active expat parent networks.
🎓 University
Turkish university entry via YÖS (Yabancı Öğrenci Sınavı — Foreign Student Exam) for international students or direct application to private universities. Many universities hold their own YÖS exam. Applications typically March–June for September enrollment. Top public universities: Boğaziçi University (Istanbul), Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ, Ankara), Hacettepe University (Ankara), Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ). Several have English-taught programmes.

TÖMER is Turkey's most established Turkish language school for foreigners. Branches in Istanbul, Ankara, and other cities. Certificate widely recognised. Used by some for residence permit language requirements. TÖMER certificate required for some long-term visa/citizenship pathways.
Many private language schools in Istanbul and other major cities. Quality varies. Some offer online options. Istanbul neighbourhoods with language schools: Taksim, Kadıköy, Beşiktaş.
Turkish government-run cultural institute promoting Turkish language and culture. Free or subsidised courses available in Turkey and in their global centres. In Turkey, check local branches.
