Turkish (Türkçe) is an Altaic language in the Turkic language family — linguistically completely unrelated to Indo-European languages (no cognates with English, French, German, or Russian). This makes it genuinely challenging for European language speakers: entirely different grammar (agglutinative structure with suffixes), SOV word order, vowel harmony, and 8 vowels. However: Turkish has been written in the Latin alphabet since 1928 (Atatürk's alphabet reform) — so reading is immediately achievable. Turkish pronunciation is very regular and phonetic. Turkish people are extremely appreciative of any effort by foreigners to speak their language — even basic phrases (merhaba, teşekkür ederim, çay lütfen) create immediate goodwill. B2 Turkish opens Istanbul's full social and professional world.
TÖMER Turkish Language Course
Open to all foreigners. Turkey does not have a mandatory integration/language course requirement for residence permits. TÖMER certificates are useful for citizenship applications (long-term residency route) and some work permit scenarios.
TRY 8,000–20,000 per level (A1 through C1). Prices increase with inflation. Check current fees at TÖMER centres.

TÖMER certificate recognised by Turkish universities and many employers. The Turkish Proficiency Exam (Türkçe Yeterlilik Sınavı) is an internationally recognised qualification.

Yunus Emre Enstitüsü Turkish Courses
The Yunus Emre Institute (YEE) is a Turkish government cultural institute that promotes Turkish language and culture. Free or heavily subsidised Turkish language courses in Turkey and at their 60+ global centres. Also offers cultural events, seminars, and library resources.
Open to all foreigners. No prerequisites for A1 level.
Free or nominal cost in many locations
Register at local Yunus Emre Institute. Istanbul has multiple branches. Find at yunusemre.gov.tr.
Language Levels — What Each Means
Basic greetings, numbers, colours, simple questions. Order çay, get a taxi, navigate a bazaar. Takes 1–2 months of regular study.
Required for: Useful from day one. Not required for anything official.
Simple conversations, shopping, asking for help. Handles basic bureaucratic interactions with patience and goodwill from Turkish officials.
Required for: Making daily life significantly easier. Basic phone calls.
Hold basic conversations on familiar topics, understand slow speech, navigate Turkish bureaucracy independently, read simple texts.
Required for: Some job requirements. Better integration in Turkish social environments.
Comfortable conversation, understand TV news, participate in professional meetings, handle complex bureaucratic situations. Read Turkish newspapers.
Required for: Turkish citizenship (residency route). Most formal employment at Turkish companies. Regulated profession practice.

Learn the 100 most common Turkish words first — they cover ~50% of everyday speech. Duolingo and Anki decks make this easy.

Vowel harmony (sesli uyumu) is the hardest grammatical concept — suffixes change their vowels to match the root word vowel. Get this early.

Turkish is agglutinative — single words can be entire sentences: "Gidebilmektedir" = "He/she is able to go." Build understanding of suffixes systematically.
