Albania (AL)
Albania is a low-cost, fast-changing Balkan country with Adriatic and Ionian coastlines, mountain towns, a growing Tirana tech and cafe scene, EU-candidate reforms, generous visa access for many nationalities and a practical Unique Permit route for work and digital nomads.
Getting Around
Transport options for living in Albania.
Public Transport Overview
Albania has inexpensive buses, minibuses and intercity vans, but schedules and stops can be informal outside Tirana. Tirana city buses are useful but crowded at peak times. There is no metro and rail is very limited.

Taxi & Rideshare
Taxis are affordable by Western standards but agree meter/fare first. Use reputable companies or app dispatch where available. Airport taxis have posted/typical rates but confirm before departure.
Rideshare (Long-distance)
Uber and Bolt do not operate in Albania. Local ride-hailing apps are the practical alternatives: Clust (English UI, card payment, works at Tirana airport), Patoko (cheapest in major cities), and Vrapon (widest multi-city coverage). WhatsApp-dispatched taxi companies are also common. Rental cars are popular for coastal and mountain travel.
Cycling
Tirana has added bike lanes, but traffic behaviour requires caution. Coastal towns can be pleasant off-season; summer traffic and narrow roads make cycling risky.
Intercity Trains
Rail service is minimal and not a practical default for expats in 2026. Use buses, rental car or private transfer for intercity trips.
Driving
Albania drives on the right. Speed limits: 40 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h on rural roads, 110 km/h on motorways (130 km/h on the A1). Driving requires defensive habits: aggressive overtaking, livestock, pedestrians, mountain roads and variable road quality. Main corridors have improved, but rural roads can be rough.
Airports
Tirana International Airport is the main hub. Kukes and Vlore airport development/operations are evolving; verify before planning. Airport bus, taxi and rental cars connect Tirana and coastal destinations.
