Bahrain (BH)
A compact, English-friendly Gulf island state with no personal income tax, strong banking and professional services, liberal social norms by regional standards, and a practical base for Saudi Arabia via the King Fahd Causeway.
Banking in Bahrain
Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.
Bahrain is a major Gulf financial centre — home to the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) and over 400 licensed financial institutions. The Bahraini dinar (BHD) is pegged to the USD at exactly 0.376 (1 USD ≈ 2.66 BHD), providing complete currency stability for USD earners. Expats must hold a CPR (Central Population Registry) card — the Bahraini residency ID — to open a full bank account; tourist-entry banking is very limited. Most employers require a Bahraini bank account for WPS (Wage Protection System) salary compliance. BenefitPay is the dominant mobile payment platform — Benefit Company operates Bahrain's interbank ATM network and the BenefitPay app for instant transfers by mobile number. FAWRI and FAWRI+ provide real-time interbank settlement for small and large transfers respectively.

Payment culture
BenefitPay is the dominant peer-to-peer and merchant payment platform in Bahrain — virtually all residents use it to send and receive money by mobile number, pay merchants via QR code, and settle utility bills. Register for BenefitPay immediately after opening a bank account. Visa and Mastercard contactless payments are universally accepted in malls (City Centre, Avenues, Seef), supermarkets (LuLu, Carrefour, Sultan Center), and restaurants. Cash (BHD) is still needed for small cold stores (bakalas), traditional souqs, tips, taxis, and building services. FAWRI provides instant interbank transfers under BHD 100; FAWRI+ covers higher amounts. Cheques remain common for rent and large commercial transactions — bounced cheques carry criminal liability under Bahraini law. Apple Pay and Samsung Pay are accepted at contactless terminals.
Cash access
Benefit ATM network covers all Bahraini bank ATMs — fee-free withdrawals for Bahraini bank cardholders at any Benefit-network machine. ATMs are plentiful in Manama city centre, Seef Mall, Bahrain City Centre, Riffa, and at petrol stations (BAPCO). Withdrawal limits: typically BHD 200–500 per transaction. Foreign card fees: BHD 1–3 per withdrawal from most Bahraini ATMs. Carry BHD 20–50 cash for taxis, small shops, souqs, and tips. Currency exchange: Manama souq exchange houses and bank branches offer better rates than airport kiosks.
Benefit Credit Bureau (BCrB)
The Benefit Credit Bureau (BCrB) — operated by Benefit Company and licensed by the Central Bank of Bahrain — maintains consumer and corporate credit records. Request your personal credit report via the BCrB portal at creditbureau.bh or through your bank. CPR and a Bahraini bank account are required for portal access.
Free annual check: One free credit report per year available from the BCrB portal at creditbureau.bh. CPR and bank account registration required for access.
The BCrB records all loans, credit cards, overdrafts, and payment history with CBB-licensed lenders. Missed repayments, credit card defaults, or bounced cheques severely damage your BCrB record and future credit applications. New expats start with no Bahraini credit history — build it through: consistent salary deposits, on-time loan payments, and responsible credit card use. Good BCrB standing is required for car loans, personal loans, and housing finance products.
International transfers
BenefitPay exchange service and independent exchange houses (Al Ansari, UAE Exchange, LuLu Exchange, Western Union) offer competitive rates for South Asian, Southeast Asian, and European remittance corridors. Wise is significantly cheaper than bank SWIFT for personal international transfers from BHD — compare rates at wise.com before each transfer. HSBC Bahrain Premier clients have the best SWIFT rates from a traditional bank. For large transfers above BHD 6,000, CBB AML regulations require source-of-funds documentation. WPS salary: all Bahraini-registered employers must pay salaries through WPS-compliant Bahraini bank accounts — provide your bank IBAN and account details to HR before your first pay cycle.
