Digital Services

Digital ID, e-government and essential apps in Bahrain.

eKey 2.0 (الهوية الرقمية)

Bahrain's national digital identity platform, operated by the Information and eGovernment Authority (iGA). eKey links your CPR number to a secure digital credential used to authenticate across government portals, municipal services, LMRA, SIO, EWA, CBB, and an increasing number of private-sector services. The eKey has two levels: basic (for most resident services) and advanced (for sensitive financial and legal services, requiring stronger identity verification).

How to get it: Download the Bahrain.bh app or the eKey app. Enrol using your CPR smart card, Bahrain mobile number, and OTP verification. For advanced eKey, in-person verification or smart-card PIN authentication may be required. New residents should set up eKey as soon as they receive their CPR smart card — it is a prerequisite for many online services. If your Bahrain mobile number changes, update it in eKey immediately or you will be locked out of OTP-dependent services.

E-Government Portal

https://www.bahrain.bh

The Bahrain.bh portal and eKey system are well-integrated by regional standards, but service availability and quality can vary. Keep your Bahrain mobile number updated as it is the backbone of all OTP-dependent authentication. Some services (particularly LMRA permit processing and Golden Residency) still involve in-person steps despite online application portals. For business owners: the Sijilat portal (sijilat.com.bh) is the primary platform for CR management and is separate from but linked to Bahrain.bh. Bahrain Arabic government apps and portals may load faster and have more features than English-language equivalents in some cases.

Broadband internet: Bahrain has high-quality fibre broadband (FTTH) with speeds up to 1Gbps available from Batelco (now Beyon Broadband) and Zain. Monthly plans range from BD 15–40 for 100Mbps–500Mbps residential connections. Batelco/Beyon offers the widest fibre coverage; Zain is competitive in pricing for newer developments. Contract periods are typically 12–24 months with early-termination fees. Mobile networks: Batelco, Zain Bahrain, and STC Bahrain all offer 4G LTE widely across the island and 5G in major urban and commercial areas. eSIM support is available from Batelco and Zain for compatible devices (iPhone XS and later, recent Android flagship models) as of 2025. Postpaid plans typically start at BD 8–15/month for unlimited data with fair-use limits. VPN usage: there are no national-level VPN blocks in Bahrain comparable to some GCC neighbours, but VOIP services (Skype, WhatsApp calls) may occasionally be subject to restrictions — check current status. Banking IBAN format: BH + 2 check digits + 4-letter bank code + 14-digit account number (22 characters total). SWIFT codes for major banks: NBB = NBOBBHBM; BBK = BBKUBHBM; Ahli United = AUBBBHBM; ila Bank = ABCOBHBM. International transfers from Bahrain require IBAN and SWIFT of the receiving bank and can typically be completed within 1–3 working days for major currency corridors.
