Start a business or go freelance in Bahrain.
๐งโ๐ป Freelancer / Self-Employed Guide
Steps to register:
- 1 Confirm your legal route: employer sponsorship, registered worker permit, investor/CR route, or Golden Residency with separate work permission where applicable.
- 2 Check whether your activity is permitted for foreign ownership or needs a Bahraini partner, professional licence, municipality approval, or sector regulator.
- 3 Reserve a business name and apply for Commercial Registration through Sijilat if using a company route.
- 4 Open a Bahrain bank account and keep CPR, lease, CR, and UBO documents aligned.
- 5 Register for VAT with NBR if taxable supplies exceed BD 37,500 or voluntary registration makes sense.
- 6 Use invoices with CR number, VAT number if registered, customer details, supply date, and BHD amounts.
Tax registration
Businesses register through Sijilat and the National Bureau for Revenue for VAT where required. Most small non-oil businesses pay no corporate income tax, but VAT, municipal fees, LMRA fees, accounting, and sector licences still matter.
VAT threshold
Mandatory VAT registration: BD 37,500 annual taxable supplies for Bahrain-resident businesses. Voluntary: BD 18,750.
Invoicing
VAT-registered businesses must issue compliant tax invoices and keep records. Non-VAT freelancers should still issue numbered invoices with CR/permit details, scope, payment terms, and bank details.
Social security
Non-Bahraini employees do not receive Bahraini old-age pension. Employers pay SIO employment injury and, for many expat private-sector workers, end-of-service fund contributions.
๐ก Do not work on a visit visa or outside your LMRA-approved activity. Bahrain is business-friendly, but licensing mismatches can create visa, banking, VAT, and enforcement problems.
