💼 Work Permits

EU Citizens

EU citizens do not have free movement rights in Bahrain; they need the same work/residence sponsorship as other non-GCC nationals.

Non-EU Citizens

Most foreign employees need an LMRA work permit and residence permit linked to a Bahraini employer. Changing jobs must be done through the legal transfer/cancellation route.

EU Blue Card

There is no EU Blue Card equivalent. Senior professionals may qualify for employer sponsorship, investor routes, or Bahrain Golden Residency if they meet criteria.

Freelancer Visa

The old Flexi Permit was replaced by registered-worker arrangements. Self-employment depends on a registered worker permit, commercial registration, investor residence, or other approved route; visit visas do not allow work.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours Private sector commonly works 40-48 hours per week, often Sunday to Thursday. Ramadan working hours are reduced for Muslim workers and many offices shorten hours for everyone.

Annual leave Private-sector workers are generally entitled to 30 calendar days annual leave after one year, plus official public holidays.

Sick leave Up to 55 days per year under labour law: 15 days full pay, 20 days half pay, and 20 days unpaid with medical certification.

Trial period Probation is commonly 3 months and may be up to 6 months in some roles if stated in the contract.

Notice period 30 days is common; contracts and labour law rules matter. Keep written notice and final-settlement records.

Salary range Office/admin BD 350-800/month; skilled professional BD 900-2,500; finance/tech/engineering BD 1,500-4,500+; senior packages can include housing, school, car, and flights.
