👶 Childcare & Kindergarten

Krippe €0–400/month (means-tested subsidy)

Age: 0–3 years

Subsidy available

All children from age 1 have a legal right to a Krippe place. Cost is income-based (einkommensabhängig). In many cities, Krippe is nearly free.

Apply to individual Kitas or through the municipal portal (Kita-Navigator in NRW, KitaFinder in Munich, etc.). Bring passport, proof of address, income documents.

⏱️ Apply immediately on arrival — waitlists in cities like Munich and Berlin can be 12–18 months. Apply to multiple Kitas simultaneously.

Kindergarten €0–250/month (often free from age 3)

Many states offer free Kindergarten from age 3. Some states (Berlin, Hamburg) offer free childcare from earlier.

Grundschule

Register at your local Grundschule. Bring birth certificate, passport, proof of address. Schools are assigned by catchment area (Schulbezirk).

After 4 years (or 6 in Berlin/Brandenburg), children are allocated to secondary school tracks based on grades and teacher recommendation.

Secondary Free

Gymnasium / Realschule / Hauptschule / Gesamtschule

Ages: 10–18 years (grades 5–12/13) · Language: German

Three tracks: Gymnasium (academic, leads to Abitur university entrance), Realschule (practical), Hauptschule (basic). Gesamtschule combines all tracks.

International Schools

Major cities have British, American and International Baccalaureate (IB) schools. Costs: €10,000–25,000/year. Examples: Berlin British School, Frankfurt International School, Munich International School.

University

Tuition fee

Almost free for EU students: €100–400 semester fees (administrative, not tuition). Non-EU students: €1,500–3,500/semester at some state universities.

Semester fee

€50–350/semester, includes the Semesterticket for free public transport in the university city.

Student visa

Non-EU students need a student visa. Apply at the German embassy in your home country before arrival.

Health insurance

Compulsory. Students under 25 can stay on parents' public health insurance. Over 25: student rate at a GKV (~€120/month).

Apply through uni-assist.de for international applications or directly to the university. Deadlines: winter semester (starts Oct) by July 15; summer semester (starts April) by January 15.

High quality, internationally recognised certificates. Good for those needing official certification.
