๐งโ๐ป Freelancer / Self-Employed Guide
Steps to register:
- 1 Choose a lawful residence basis before working from Ghana.
- 2 Register a business name or company with the Registrar-General if billing locally.
- 3 Use Ghana Card/Non-Citizen ID to align tax, bank, and mobile-money records.
- 4 Register with GRA and file income tax/self-assessment returns.
- 5 Register for VAT if turnover or business model requires it.
- 6 Keep invoices, withholding-tax certificates, and mobile-money records monthly.
- 7 Take private health and professional liability insurance where relevant.
Tax registration
Ghana Card PIN is used as TIN for individuals. Businesses register with GRA and use taxpayer portals for filing and payment.
VAT threshold
GHS 200,000 annual taxable supplies (2026). Standard VAT rate: 15% + NHIL 2.5% + GetFund 1% = 18.5% effective rate on taxable supplies. Flat-rate scheme (3%) available for retailers below a lower sub-threshold.
Invoicing
Invoices should show legal name, address, Ghana Card/TIN or company TIN, VAT status if registered, invoice number, date, service description, currency, and withholding-tax treatment.
Social security
Self-employed people can join SSNIT voluntarily. Employees must be registered by employers and contributions remitted monthly.
๐ก Remote workers serving foreign clients still need immigration and tax advice. A tourist/visitor stay is not a work authorisation for Ghana-source work.
