Digital Services

Digital ID, e-government and essential apps in Greece.

Taxisnet / gov.gr Digital Identity

Taxisnet is Greece's government digital authentication system, used for accessing almost all public digital services. gov.gr is the unified government portal built on top of Taxisnet credentials. The Greek government has also been rolling out "wallet" functionality for digital documents (digital ID card, etc.) via the gov.gr app.

How to get it: Register at taxisnet.gr with your AFM (tax number), AMKA, and personal details. An activation code is sent by post to your registered address within 3–7 business days. After activation, use your Taxisnet username and password to access all gov.gr services. Two-factor authentication via mobile phone is mandatory for most sensitive operations.

E-Government Portal

https://www.gov.gr

Greek e-government has improved dramatically since 2020. Most previously in-person tasks can now be completed online via gov.gr with Taxisnet credentials. However, many processes still require in-person completion for identity verification (biometric passport, residence permit) or notarial authentication. Document submissions through gov.gr are legally equivalent to in-person submissions. The KEP (Κέντρα Εξυπηρέτησης Πολιτών) can assist with digital services access for those without internet access or unfamiliar with the platforms.

Greece's digital infrastructure has improved significantly but still has gaps: not all municipalities offer fully digital services, and some provincial offices still require physical presence. For complex multi-step processes (residence permits, property transactions), in-person visits remain required. Greek government websites are available in Greek only in most cases — use Google Translate or the Chrome browser translation feature for navigation. The KEP (ΚΕΠ — Κέντρα Εξυπηρέτησης Πολιτών) are physical one-stop shops that help navigate public services and can act as intermediaries for document submissions to other agencies — an essential resource for newly arrived residents.
