Modern Greek (Νέα Ελληνικά) is the official language of Greece. It has its own unique alphabet (24 letters) and phonetics that require dedicated learning. For daily life in Athens and tourist areas, English is widely understood, but knowing Greek opens significant social and professional doors, is required for naturalisation (B1 level), and is necessary for navigating Greek bureaucracy. Greek is considered moderately difficult for English speakers — the alphabet can be learned in 1–2 weeks; conversational level takes 6–12 months of study.
Greek Language and Integration Course for Migrants
All legal residents and migrants. Priority for those with pending naturalisation applications or long-term residence permit applications.
€0 (free, ESPA-funded) through DYPA or municipalities; €100–400/term at private language schools
3–12 months depending on starting level and intensity (typically 2–4 hours/week)
A1–B1 Greek language proficiency. Some courses include Greek history and civic knowledge preparation.

Hellenic Open University / Centre for the Greek Language
The Centre for the Greek Language (Κέντρο Ελληνικής Γλώσσας), under the Ministry of Education, offers certified examination courses for the Certificate of Attainment in Greek. The Hellenic Open University (ΕΑΠ) also offers distance-learning Greek language courses.
