Eligibility
Citizens of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland have a shorter path to Icelandic citizenship under the Nordic Convention — 4 years of continuous legal residence rather than the standard 7 years. Nordic citizens may also retain their Nordic citizenship (dual citizenship fully permitted since 2003).

Nordic cooperation under the Nordic Passport Union creates preferential arrangements for Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, and Finnish citizens in Iceland. These citizens already have the right to live and work in Iceland and have one of the most straightforward paths to citizenship of any foreign nationals.
Citizenship by descent (Ríkisfang með yfirfærslu)
Eligibility
Children born to at least one Icelandic parent automatically receive Icelandic citizenship at birth, regardless of where they are born. Rules apply to both maternal and paternal lines.

Icelandic citizenship can be acquired by declaration for some individuals with Icelandic ancestry who did not automatically acquire it. The law on citizenship descent has been clarified over years. Contact the Ministry of Justice and Security for specific descent cases.
Marriage to an Icelandic citizen
Eligibility
Marriage to an Icelandic citizen reduces the required residence period for naturalisation to 4 years (down from the standard 7 years). The Icelandic spouse must have been an Icelandic citizen for at least 5 years before the application is submitted. All other standard requirements — Icelandic language test, integration, financial self-sufficiency — still apply.

Marriage reduces the residence threshold from 7 to 4 years but does not eliminate the language test or other standard requirements. Dual citizenship is fully permitted — you do not need to renounce your prior nationality.

Dual citizenship is allowed — Iceland has permitted dual (multiple) citizenship since 1 July 2003, when the Nationality Act was amended. You do not need to renounce your previous nationality when naturalising as Icelandic, and Icelandic citizens who acquire a foreign nationality do not lose their Icelandic citizenship. Former Icelandic citizens who lost their nationality before 2003 by acquiring a foreign citizenship may restore their Icelandic citizenship by applying after 1 year of domicile in Iceland. Your home country's law may still prohibit dual citizenship — verify with your home country embassy before proceeding.
