Iceland (IS)
Iceland is a North Atlantic volcanic island nation of extraordinary natural beauty — home to geysers, glaciers, lava fields, midnight sun, the Northern Lights, and some of the world's most active volcanoes.
Family Rights & Benefits
Maternity, parental leave and child benefits in Iceland.
Iceland has one of the world's most generous and gender-equal parental leave systems, reformed significantly in 2021 and further updated in 2024. Both parents receive substantial individual (non-transferable) leave rights in addition to shared leave, with the explicit goal of encouraging fathers to take full leave. The system is administered by Fæðingarorlofssjóður (Parental Leave Fund). Iceland also provides extensive child benefits, subsidised childcare, and strong protections for working parents. These rights apply equally to same-sex couples, adoptive parents, and single parents.
Fæðingarorlof (Parental Leave — Icelandic system is parent-neutral)
Before birth: Some leave can begin before birth — typically up to 2 weeks pre-natal under most collective agreements. The 6-month personal entitlement can begin from 1 month before expected birth date.
After birth: Each parent receives 6 months of non-transferable paid parental leave (fæðingarorlof) plus there are an additional 6 months of shared leave that parents can divide as they choose. Total available: up to 18 months between both parents. This is one of the most generous systems in the world. The "use it or lose it" structure for each parent's individual 6 months strongly encourages fathers to take full leave — Icelandic fathers take an average of 5+ months of parental leave, among the highest in the world.
Job protection: Full job protection during parental leave. The employer must hold the position open or offer an equivalent position upon return. Dismissal during parental leave is prohibited except in cases of serious misconduct or genuine redundancy (subject to strict rules).
Fæðingarorlof
Max duration: Up to 18 months total between both parents (6 months each non-transferable + 6 months shared)
Split rules / Elterngeld: Each parent has 6 months of non-transferable personal leave (foreldrahlutinn). The additional 6 months (sameiginlegt fæðingarorlof) can be divided as the parents choose. Single parents: can access up to 12 months total (their personal 6 months + the other parent's 6 months). Adoption: same rights apply from the date of adoption.
Benefits
Fæðingarorlofsgreiðslur (Parental Leave Pay)
80% of average salary for the first 6 months (each parent's non-transferable share), capped at ISK 700,000/month (2026). Shared months at 80% also. Minimum benefit (for those with insufficient work history): approximately ISK 105,000/month.
Duration: Up to 18 months between both parents (covering the full entitled leave period)
Eligibility: Parents employed or self-employed in Iceland, with 6 months of continuous residence and contributions. Both parents must have paid into the fæðingarorlofssjóður through work. New arrivals: may need to wait until 6-month residency requirement is met for full benefits.
How to apply: Apply at faedingarorlof.is at least 8 weeks before the expected birth/adoption date. Both parents must submit separate applications. Payment starts automatically when leave begins.
Barnabætur (Child Benefit)
ISK 20,000–35,000 per child per month (means-tested — higher amounts for lower incomes). Non-means-tested base amount for all children.
Duration: From birth until age 18
Eligibility: All parents with legal residence in Iceland for at least 6 months. Both income-tested and universal components.
How to apply: Automatic once kennitala is registered for the child. Managed by Tryggingastofnun (TR — tr.is).
Leikskólastyrking (Childcare Subsidy)
Municipalities subsidise leikskóli (pre-school) costs — parents pay ISK 45,000–75,000/month; full cost ISK 90,000–130,000/month.
Duration: From child age 1 until school entry at age 6
Eligibility: All children aged 1–6 with a place in a licensed leikskóli (pre-school). Subsidy level depends on municipality and household income.
How to apply: Applied through municipality leikskóla registration. Income documentation required for means-tested component.
Fæðingarstyrking (One-time Birth Grant)
Approximately ISK 20,000–40,000 one-time payment per child
Duration: One-time payment at birth or adoption
Eligibility: Parents registered in Iceland with a newborn or adopted child
How to apply: Through Tryggingastofnun (TR) — apply within 6 months of birth/adoption.
Sick child leave
Parents are entitled to take leave when their child (under 12) is sick. This is typically taken from their own sick leave entitlement in the first instance, or through special parental sick child provisions in collective agreements. Most Icelandic collective agreements provide for 6–12 days per year of sick child leave at full pay (depending on agreement and seniority). Children with chronic illness or disability: extended provisions available.
Birth registration
All births in Iceland must be registered at Þjóðskrá Íslands (National Registry) within 2 months. The hospital typically handles initial registration. The child receives a kennitala. Both parents must be identified. Icelandic naming rules apply: the child must receive an approved Icelandic first name (from the approved list or via Mannanafnanefnd — the National Naming Committee). The surname follows patronymic/matronymic convention (e.g., child of Guðrún Jónsdóttir named Sigríður would be Sigríður Guðrúnardóttir). Foreign parents may apply to give the child a non-Icelandic name through the Naming Committee.
Childcare rights
Children aged 6–16 are subject to compulsory education (skólaskylda). Municipalities have a legal obligation to provide leikskóli (pre-school) places for children aged 1–6. Special education rights for children with disabilities or learning differences are guaranteed under law. Children's rights are strongly protected — child protection (barnavernd) services intervene when necessary.
