Rafræn skilríki (Electronic ID / Auðkenni)
Iceland's national electronic identification system, operated by Auðkenni hf. The Rafræn skilríki (electronic certificate) is issued to all Icelandic kennitala holders and functions as both a digital identity certificate and an electronic signature. Used for all government digital services, banking authentication, and official document signing. Available as a smartphone app (Auðkenni app for iOS and Android) or as a hardware certificate on a chip (older method). The app is the standard modern method.
How to get it: 1. Get your kennitala from Þjóðskrá Íslands. 2. Download the Auðkenni app (iOS/Android). 3. Activate via Íslandsbanki, Landsbankinn, or Arion Bank online banking (existing customers) or visit a bank branch with your passport and kennitala. 4. Follow the in-app verification process. Some banks issue the certificate entirely via app with video verification. Processing: typically same-day or within 24 hours.
E-Government Portal
https://island.isIsland.is is one of the world's most comprehensive and well-designed government digital portals. Iceland has been a consistent leader in digital government — consistently ranking in the top 3 globally in the UN E-Government Development Index. Virtually all interactions with Icelandic government bodies can be completed digitally via island.is using Rafræn skilríki. The platform was redesigned in the early 2020s and is genuinely user-friendly with excellent English language support for many services.

FreeThe Icelandic Meteorological Office app — essential for weather forecasts and road condition alerts. Iceland's weather can change dramatically and this app is used daily by residents. Includes aurora borealis forecasts.
Safetravel (SafeTravel.is)
FreeIcelandic Association for Search and Rescue app — register your travel plan before any outdoor adventure. ICE-SAR checks registered plans if a search is activated. Also provides emergency alerts and volcanic hazard warnings.

FreeThe Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration app — real-time road condition reports, road closures, and F-road status (open/closed). Essential for any driving in Iceland, especially in winter or when planning highland trips.
Almannavarnir

FreeYour chosen bank's mobile app for daily banking. All three major banks have well-designed, English-language apps. Transfers, account management, and bill payments all managed here.

The integration between kennitala, Rafræn skilríki, and island.is means most administrative tasks that would take days of office visits in other countries can be completed in minutes on a phone. English language support is excellent on most government digital platforms — a significant advantage for expats. Note: The Auðkenni app will occasionally require in-bank or video verification for setup — plan for this when first arriving. Without Rafræn skilríki, digital Iceland is inaccessible.
