Key Documents Checklist
Gather these before and after moving to Israel.
The Israeli national ID card for all citizens and permanent residents. Required for almost all government, banking, and everyday transactions. Issued to all citizens and permanent residents, including Olim upon arrival.
Issued to new immigrants (Olim Chadashim) upon arrival at Ben Gurion Airport. Confirms Aliyah status and entitles holder to immigrant benefits including tax exemptions, absorption basket, free Ulpan, and reduced Arnona.
Required for entry, visa applications, and bank account opening. Keep a photocopy separate from the original. Israeli citizens also hold an Israeli passport (Darkon Yisraeli) for international travel.
Required for non-Jewish/non-citizen employees working in Israel. Employer-sponsored. Issued by Ministry of Economy and Industry. Must be obtained before commencing employment.
Required for school enrollment, benefit applications, and family registration. Foreign birth certificates must be translated to Hebrew by a certified translator (Metargem Mumche) and apostilled.
Required for spouse immigration applications, joint bank accounts, and government benefits. Foreign marriage certificates must be apostilled and translated into Hebrew.
Required for professional licence recognition and some employment. Must be evaluated by VATAT (Committee for the Evaluation of Foreign Academic Degrees) or relevant professional authority. Apostille and Hebrew translation required.
Required for some visa applications, professional licences (nursing, teaching, legal), and sensitive employment. Must be obtained from your country of origin and apostilled.
Standard written lease agreement. Must be registered with Tabu (Land Registry) for leases over 1 year. Key document for municipal services, bank address verification, and Arnona (municipal tax) setup.
Required for HMO registration (Kupat Cholim), especially for children enrolling in school (vaccination certificates required). Bring records from your home country and get them translated.
For those making Aliyah under the Law of Return who need to prove Jewish descent. May include: birth certificates of Jewish grandparent/parent, synagogue membership, bar/bat mitzvah certificates, or letters from recognized Jewish organizations. Requirements assessed by Jewish Agency.
Required for licence exchange at the Ministry of Transport (Misrad HaTachbura). EU licences qualify for simple exchange (eye test). Most Western country licences qualify for short practical test. IDP valid for up to 1 year for tourists.
📜 What is an Apostille?
An apostille is an official certification that validates a document for international use. It is issued by a designated authority in the country where the document was issued (usually a court or government office). Required for documents from Hague Convention member states.
🌍 Certified Translations
Certified translations must be done by a sworn/authorised translator. In Israel, only translations by officially registered translators are accepted by government offices. Keep originals — they may be returned after verification.
