Employment Service (Sherut HaTa'asuka)

Register online or at your nearest Employment Service branch. Bring Teudat Zehut (Israeli ID) or work visa, CV, and any relevant qualifications. For Olim, the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration (Misrad HaKlita) also offers employment placement support.

EU Citizens

EU citizens do NOT have automatic right to work in Israel (Israel is not in the EU or EEA). EU citizens need a B1 work visa sponsored by an Israeli employer, just like other non-citizens. Exception: Jewish EU citizens may make Aliyah and receive citizenship, gaining full work rights.

Non-EU Citizens

Non-Jewish foreign workers require a B1 work visa. Employer must apply to the Ministry of Economy and Industry (Population and Immigration Authority) before the worker can begin. Quota systems apply for certain sectors. Visa tied to specific employer; switching employers requires a new permit.

EU Blue Card

Israel has no EU Blue Card equivalent. Israel uses its own work visa system (B1 visa for employment) for foreign nationals.

Freelancer Visa

There is no official Israeli freelancer visa. Foreign nationals wishing to freelance must have an appropriate legal status (Olah/citizen, or a specialist visa). Some work as independent contractors under B1 visa arrangements — this is legally complex. Consult an immigration lawyer.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours Sunday–Thursday for office workers. Start times: 8–9am; end times: 5–6pm. Many tech companies offer flexible hours and remote work. Friday is a short day (8am–1–2pm). Total legal maximum: 43 hours/week.

Annual leave 12 days in year 1, gradually increasing to 18+ days by year 7. Jewish holidays add 8–12 additional days off per year. In practice, many companies give more generous leave.

Sick leave 18 days/year cumulative. Day 1 is unpaid. Days 2–3 at 50% pay. From day 4 at 100%. No doctor's note required for the first 3 days at many tech companies.

Trial period Typical probation: 6 months (some extend to 1 year for senior roles). During probation, notice period is often shorter (as little as 1 day for first 6 months, per law).

Notice period 30 days after completing 1 year of employment. Increases by 1 day per month for the first year. Both employer and employee give equal notice.

Salary range Hi-tech software engineer: NIS 25,000–55,000/month gross. Experienced senior engineers and managers: NIS 45,000–80,000+. Other sectors significantly lower: NIS 8,000–18,000/month for service, education, admin roles. Minimum wage 2026: NIS 6,248/month (Jan–Mar), rising to NIS 6,443.85/month from April 1, 2026.

Pay frequency Monthly (salary paid between 1st–9th of the following month).

📝 Application Tips

CV format: Israeli CVs (Kvilas Avoda — קורות חיים) are typically 1–2 pages. Include a professional photo (standard practice in Israel, unlike in many Western countries). List military service if applicable. Start with summary/objective statement. LinkedIn profile is often as important as the CV in hi-tech.

Cover letter: Expected

Language: Hebrew is essential for most non-tech roles. In hi-tech, engineering, and international companies, English is the working language and Hebrew may be less critical. Russian is useful in some industries. Arabic for Arab-sector employment.

Interviews: Informal and direct. First-name basis from the start. Technical tests (coding challenges for tech roles) are common and rigorous. Multi-stage interviews (3–5 rounds) for senior tech roles. Salary negotiation is expected — do not accept the first offer without negotiating.
