Kosovo (XK)

Valid for the duration of your intended stay plus a safety margin. Required for entry, temporary residence registration, banking, notary services, and all government procedures. Note: Kosovo is not universally recognised — some travel documents may encounter administrative friction at Kosovo border crossings.

EU/EEA, US, UK, and many other nationalities enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Holders of a valid Schengen, US, or UK residence permit may enter without a Kosovo visa for up to 15 days. Check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa-free list for your nationality before travel.

Issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) — Department of Border Police and Migration for stays beyond the visa-free period. Grounds include employment, business, family reunification, study, and property ownership. Apply within 90 days of arrival; permit is usually valid for one year and renewable. Required to obtain a Kosovo ID card (letërnjoftim).

Required for non-Kosovo nationals taking up employment. The employer typically applies through the MIA. EU/EEA citizens follow a simplified procedure. A combined work-and-residence authorisation can be obtained in a single application at MIA.

Required for family residence, school enrolment, inheritance, and citizenship applications. Kosovo is NOT a Hague Apostille Convention member — foreign-issued birth certificates require full consular or embassy legalisation (apostille alone is not accepted). Official translation into Albanian (or Serbian for Serbian-community municipalities) required by a certified court interpreter (përkthyes i gjykatës).

Required for family residence permit, spousal visa, property transactions, and inheritance proceedings. Kosovo is NOT a Hague Apostille Convention member — consular/embassy legalisation of foreign documents is required; apostille is not sufficient. Certified Albanian or Serbian translation required.

Required for temporary residence and work permit applications. Must be obtained from your home country and any country where you have lived in the past 5 years. Kosovo is NOT a Hague Apostille Convention member — full consular or embassy legalisation required (apostille alone is not sufficient). Certified translation into Albanian or Serbian required.

Required for work permits and regulated-profession recognition. Academic degree recognition is handled by the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI); vocational qualifications through the National Qualifications Authority (NQA — Autoriteti Kombëtar i Kualifikimeve). Kosovo is NOT a Hague Apostille Convention member — consular/embassy legalisation required for foreign documents. Certified Albanian or Serbian translation required.

Tenancy agreement or recent utility bill in your name. Required for temporary residence registration, banking, and utility contracts. Lease agreements should be certified by a notary (noter). Foreign-language documents must be translated into Albanian or Serbian.

Issued by Kosovo Tax Administration (ATK — Administrata Tatimore e Kosovës). Required for employment payroll, invoicing, VAT registration, and banking compliance. Apply at any ATK regional office or through the e-Filing portal (efiling.atk-ks.net).

Foreign entrepreneurs register with the Kosovo Business Registration Agency (ARBK — Agjencia për Regjistrim të Bizneseve në Kosovë). Common forms are LLC (Sh.p.k.) and sole trader (Ndërmarrje Individuale). Required for obtaining an ATK fiscal number, opening a business bank account, and hiring employees.

EU/EEA driving licences can be exchanged for a Kosovo licence at the MIA Vehicle Registration and Driver Licensing department without retesting. Non-EU licence holders generally must pass a written and practical driving test. An International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home licence is recommended for temporary driving. Kosovo drives on the right.

Kosovo's public health fund (Fondi i Sigurimit Shëndetësor — FSSH) provides limited coverage for foreigners. Comprehensive private international health insurance is strongly recommended for the duration of residence. Proof of insurance is required as a supporting document for some temporary residence applications.

Required for pet import: EU pet passport or animal health certificate, microchip record, rabies vaccination certificate (issued at least 21 days before travel), and import permit from the Kosovo Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV — Agjencia Ushqimore dhe Veterinare). Contact AUV in advance to confirm requirements for your pet's country of origin.
