MyKad / MyKid / MyPR
MyKad is the Malaysian national identity card for citizens (incorporating IC number, biometric data, driving licence, passport, health information, and e-wallet). Foreign nationals do not receive a MyKad — they use their passport and visa endorsement (Employment Pass sticker in passport). MyPR is issued to Permanent Residents. Foreigner identity in Malaysia is the EP/DP/LTSVP endorsement in passport plus Immigration reference number. eKYC (electronic Know Your Customer) using face recognition + passport/EP scan is used for bank account opening (GX Bank, Boost Bank), SIM card registration, and some government e-services.
How to get it: Foreigners cannot obtain MyKad. For government e-services requiring identity verification: use passport number and Immigration reference number. For eKYC with banks/telcos: use passport + EP card + selfie photo. MySejahtera (health app from COVID era, now general health services): register with passport. MyTax (LHDN tax portal): register with Income Tax Number (obtained from LHDN) + passport. EPF i-Akaun: register with EPF membership number + IC/passport.
E-Government Portal
https://www.malaysia.gov.myMalaysia's e-government is mature for some functions (tax filing, EPF, immigration) but fragmented across multiple portals. Most foreigners interact primarily with: hasil.gov.my (tax), kwsp.gov.my (EPF), esd.imi.gov.my (immigration), and MyEG for convenience services. MyEG is a private concession company — it charges a convenience fee on top of government fees for road tax renewal, etc. Direct government portals are free but may have less user-friendly interfaces. Internet banking FPX is the standard payment method for government fees (BNM-regulated); most major Malaysian banks support FPX. Some services still require physical presence at the relevant agency — check ahead.

Touch 'n Go eWallet
FreeMalaysia's most widely used e-wallet. Covers toll payments (top-up for highway toll), LRT/MRT/Monorail/Rapid KL transit, retail QR payments, online bill payment, and reload at any 7-Eleven or convenience store. The physical Touch 'n Go card (for transit and tolls) can be reloaded via the app. Essential for daily life in Malaysia.

FreeMobile banking apps from each major Malaysian bank. Full banking on mobile: transfers (DuitNow, IBG), bill payment (JomPAY), fixed deposit opening, card management. Download the app for whichever bank you open an account with — all have strong English support.
DoctorOnCall
PaidMalaysia's leading telemedicine app — video/chat consultation with Malaysian-registered doctors. RM30–80/session. English-speaking doctors available. MC (medical certificate) issued digitally and accepted by most employers. Available 24 hours for basic consultations. Prescription delivery to your door available in KL.
MySejahtera
FreeMOH Malaysia's health app — originated during COVID-19, now used for vaccination records, appointment booking at government health facilities, and health tracking. Register with passport for foreigners. Useful for booking at Klinik Kesihatan (government health clinics) for free vaccinations if you have children.
Shopee / Lazada
FreeMalaysia's two dominant e-commerce platforms. Shopee (SEA-based) is #1 in Malaysia. Lazada (Alibaba-backed) is #2. Both deliver nationwide with 1–5 day delivery. ShopeePay and LazPay e-wallets embedded. Weekly flash sales (Shopee 9.9, 11.11, 12.12) offer major discounts. Returns process is improved but not as smooth as EU/UK online shopping.
Waze / Google Maps
FreeWaze is preferred for city driving — real-time traffic, accident reports, and speed camera alerts from the community. Essential for navigating KL traffic and highway toll routes. Google Maps also covers Malaysia well including public transit routing. Both apps include Touch 'n Go toll information.
MyTax / LHDN e-Filing
FreeLHDN's official tax portal and app (hasil.gov.my / MyTax). Used for annual income tax e-Filing (Form BE for employment income, Form B for business income). Register with Income Tax Number + passport. April 30 filing deadline for employment income. App available for iOS and Android — useful for checking tax payment status and repayment.
Primary messaging app across all demographics in Malaysia. Work communication, condo group chats, social coordination, and government service follow-up all happen via WhatsApp. Set up your Malaysian number on WhatsApp immediately on arrival — essential for integration into Malaysian daily life.
AirAsia / Malaysia Airlines Apps
FreeAirAsia app for budget domestic and international flights — Malaysia's largest low-cost carrier with hub at klia2. Malaysia Airlines app for full-service flights. Both have strong loyalty programmes (BIG Points, Enrich Miles). Malaysia is a major regional aviation hub — cheap flights to Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, and beyond.
Digital connectivity in Malaysia is strong in urban areas — 4G LTE is near-universal in KL, Selangor, Penang, and Johor Bahru. 5G is deploying across KL and major cities from 2023. Rural Sabah and Sarawak have coverage gaps. SIM card registration: mandatory with passport from 2019 — register at any telco shop or MyEG. Major telcos: Maxis, Celcom (now CelcomDigi after merger), Digi (CelcomDigi), U Mobile. Prepaid SIM RM10–30; unlimited data plans RM60–100/month. Fibre broadband: Unifi (TM), Maxis Fibre, TIME dotCom — 100Mbps–1Gbps plans. TIME has the fastest and most consistent speeds in served areas (KL, PJ, selected condos). MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) regulates telecoms.
