Denominations

Payment Culture
Cash dominates outside Maputo and Beira. M-Pesa mobile money is widely used for everyday transactions even in rural areas. Cards (Visa/Mastercard) accepted at larger supermarkets, hotels, and restaurants in major cities but unreliable at smaller outlets. Always carry MZN cash. USD is accepted informally in tourist and business settings but MZN is the required legal tender for daily commerce.
ATM Tips
ATMs are available in Maputo, Beira, Nampula and other provincial capitals. BCI and Millennium BIM ATMs are most widespread. Outside major cities, ATM availability drops sharply — always withdraw cash before travelling to rural areas or coastal resorts. Daily withdrawal limits vary: MZN 5,000–15,000 per transaction at most ATMs. International cards work at most Maputo ATMs.
Exchange Tips
Exchange at licensed forex bureaux (câmbios) or bank branches. Never exchange on the street — illegal and risky. The metical floats against major currencies. USD and EUR are easily exchangeable. South African Rand (ZAR) is also accepted near the South African border. Keep exchange receipts for converting back.
