Portuguese is the official language of Mozambique, used in government, business, education, and formal communication. Mozambique's Portuguese is closely related to European Portuguese (Portugal's standard) — Brazilian Portuguese learning resources are also broadly useful. In addition to Portuguese, Mozambique has over 20 indigenous Bantu languages: Emakhuwa (most spoken, northern Mozambique), Changana/Tswa (southern Mozambique, including Maputo), Sena (central Mozambique), Lomwe, and others. In Maputo, Changana and Portuguese are the dominant languages. Learning basic Portuguese within 3 months of arrival dramatically improves daily life quality, personal safety, community integration, and career prospects. Very few Mozambicans outside international organisations and tourist-facing businesses speak English — Portuguese is genuinely essential.
CEMO Portuguese Language Course (Centro de Estudos de Língua Portuguesa)
Open to all legal residents in Mozambique. No language requirement to enrol.
MT 5,000–15,000 per course level (group classes). Individual tuition: MT 500–2,000/hour.
8–24 weeks per level (group classes, typically 2–3 sessions per week). Intensive individual courses can achieve A2 in 8 weeks.
CEMO certificate of completion at the relevant CEFR level (A1 to C1). Not a formal international certification but widely accepted by Mozambican employers.
Contact CEMO directly in Maputo. Classes in the morning, afternoon, and evening to accommodate work schedules. Bring passport and DIRE for enrolment. Payment made at enrolment.
Instituto Camões — Portuguese Language Courses
High-quality Portuguese language courses provided through the Portuguese Cultural Institute (Instituto Camões) in partnership with the Portuguese Embassy. Prepares students for internationally recognised CAPLE (Centro de Avaliação de Português Língua Estrangeira) certificates which are valid for immigration, academic, and professional purposes across Portuguese-speaking countries.
Open to all. Particularly suited to EU expats and others needing internationally recognised Portuguese certificates.
MT 8,000–20,000 per course (higher than CEMO but internationally certified)

Language Levels — What Each Means
Can introduce yourself, ask basic questions, understand simple instructions and signs. Sufficient for basic survival: greeting neighbours, ordering food, taking a chapa.
Required for: Minimum functional daily life in Mozambique
Can handle routine transactions, understand common workplace vocabulary, communicate basic needs. Can interact with domestic staff, landlords, and shops.
Required for: Comfortable daily independence in Maputo; managing domestic staff and household
Can hold conversations on familiar topics, understand most workplace communication, navigate bureaucracy independently (DIRE, ATM). Can participate in meetings conducted in Portuguese.
Required for: Professional effectiveness in Mozambican workplace; independent government bureaucracy; many work permit categories
Can communicate fluently in professional contexts, understand complex documents, participate in business negotiations, draft professional correspondence in Portuguese.
Required for: Senior professional roles with local Mozambican counterparts; legal proceedings; CAPLE B2 for Portuguese-related immigration purposes

No government-funded language course exists for foreign residents in Mozambique. Most language learning costs are funded personally or by employers. Large employers (TotalEnergies, ENI, UN agencies) often fund Portuguese language training as part of their employee development budgets. Check with your employer's HR whether language training is budgeted. Some NGOs include language training in their expat orientation packages.

Start before you arrive — use Duolingo, Babbel, or Practice Portuguese in the months before your Mozambique move. Arriving with A1 basics reduces early-arrival stress significantly.

Mozambican Portuguese pronunciation differs from Brazilian Portuguese — European Portuguese resources are more accurate for Mozambique. Focus on European Portuguese nasal vowel sounds and consonant clusters.

Changana words are mixed into Maputo Portuguese in everyday speech — greetings like "Minjani?" (How are you?) and "Ndza khensa" (Thank you) are appreciated by locals.
