Banking in Singapore

Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.

Singapore has one of the world's most advanced and well-regulated banking systems, overseen by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). The banking sector is dominated by three local banking groups — DBS, OCBC, and UOB — alongside major international banks (HSBC, Standard Chartered, Citibank) and digital challengers (Revolut, Wise, GXS Bank). Banking infrastructure is world-class: PayNow (instant bank-to-bank transfers via phone/NRIC/FIN), NETS (local debit payment network), and contactless card payments are universally supported. Opening a bank account as an Employment Pass holder is straightforward with the right documents; most accounts can be opened online via Myinfo/Singpass verification. Interest rates on savings accounts range from 0.05% (basic) to 4–7.65% (promotional rates on UOB One, OCBC 360, DBS Multiplier accounts with salary crediting and spending conditions).

Recommended banks

DBS / POSB

English
traditional

Monthly fee: S$0 (DBS Multiplier with salary credit); S$5/month if below S$3,000 minimum balance on some accounts

Requirements: Valid Employment Pass / Dependant Pass / Permanent Residence, passport, and Singpass (for Myinfo verification). Most accounts opened online in minutes via DBS digibank app with Singpass. POSB Everyday Savings is the easiest account — no minimum balance for first 6 months.

  • + Largest ATM and branch network in Singapore (1,400+ ATMs, 400+ CDMs)
  • + DBS digibank app rated best digital banking app in Singapore — comprehensive, English-only
  • + DBS Multiplier account earns up to 4.1% p.a. interest with salary credit + 3 qualifying transactions
  • + Multi-currency account (DBS My Account) holds 13 currencies — good for international travel
  • + PayNow registered automatically; instant transfers free
  • + POSB (People's Own Savings Bank — a DBS subsidiary) is the most accessible brand, especially for everyday banking
  • - Promotional interest rates require salary crediting and multiple simultaneous spending conditions (credit card spend, home loan, insurance) — practical rate for most expats without all conditions is 0.05–0.5%
  • - POSB accounts have lower features than DBS premium accounts — DBS Multiplier benefits not available on POSB Everyday Savings
  • - International SWIFT fees for non-DBS-Remit corridors: S$20–40 per outbound wire plus 1–2% FX spread — Wise is significantly cheaper for most overseas transfers
  • - DBS Remit promotional rates limited to select corridors (India, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia) — all other destinations revert to standard SWIFT wire fees

OCBC

English
traditional

Monthly fee: S$0 (OCBC 360 with salary credit S$1,800+/month); S$2/month fee waived if meeting any qualifying transaction

Requirements: Employment Pass / Dependant Pass / Long-Term Visit Pass, passport, and Singpass for Myinfo verification. Online account opening via OCBC Digital app with Singpass.

  • + Online banking and mobile app are highly rated and English-only

  • - International SWIFT fees: S$20–35 per outbound wire plus 1–2% FX spread — Wise is significantly cheaper for regular overseas transfers
  • - Frank card (starter credit card for new-to-Singapore customers) has low initial credit limit of S$500–1,000 — upgrade to higher limit takes 6–12 months of credit history

Payment culture

Singapore is a near-cashless society. PayNow (instant transfer via phone number or NRIC/FIN — linked to all major bank accounts) is the dominant payment method between individuals and for small businesses. NETS (Network for Electronic Transfers) QR code and debit payments are used at hawker centres, supermarkets, and retail. Visa and Mastercard contactless (payWave/PayPass) work everywhere. Apple Pay and Google Pay are widely supported. Cash is used for some traditional wet market stalls and older provision shops. Tipping is not customary — the 10% service charge on restaurant bills is not distributed to staff in all establishments; additional tipping is entirely optional.

Cash access

DBS/POSB has 1,400+ ATMs island-wide — the densest network. UOB, OCBC, and StanChart have their own networks. Most ATMs are open 24/7 and charge no fee for cards issued in Singapore. Foreign card ATM withdrawal fees: typically S$5–7 flat plus 1–3% conversion. 7-Eleven stores have ATMs. Changi Airport terminals have ATMs from all major banks. Foreign cash exchange: use licensed money changers (better rates than banks) at Raffles Place, Lucky Plaza (Orchard), and Mustafa Centre (Little India). Avoid airport exchange booths for large amounts.

CBS Credit Score

Credit Bureau (Singapore) — creditbureau.com.sg — is the only credit bureau in Singapore. Request a personal credit report at creditbureau.com.sg for S$8.56 (standard) or S$16.12 (enhanced with history). CBS credit score ranges from 1000 (lowest) to 2000 (highest) — score of 1911–2000 is AA (lowest risk); below 1723 is CC–HH (higher risk). Banks pull your CBS score for credit card and loan applications.

Free annual check: One free CBS credit report is available per year for Singapore citizens and PRs from My Info portal (Singpass) — search for "credit report" in Singpass app. Not available to foreigners on EP/S Pass.

New arrivals have no Singapore credit history — expect to be declined for most credit cards in the first 3–6 months. To build credit: get a secured credit card (DBS Visa Debit linked to DBS account works as a starting point); pay bills on time; avoid multiple credit applications in quick succession. Most banks approve standard credit cards after 6–12 months of EP holder status with salary crediting.

International transfers

For international money transfers, Wise (wise.com) offers the mid-market exchange rate plus a transparent fee (typically 0.5–1% for most currency pairs) — far better than bank wire rates which add 1–3% FX spread plus S$20–40 transfer fee. Revolut (for recipients with Revolut accounts or bank accounts in supported countries) is an alternative. DBS Remit is competitive for some corridors (India, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia) with promotional rates. OCBC Velocity offers competitive international wire rates for business accounts. Always compare rates on Wise before using bank wire.
