Visa-Free Access

As a Schengen Area and EU member state, Slovenia allows visa-free entry for citizens of all EU/EEA/Swiss member states indefinitely. Citizens of the following countries may also enter visa-free for stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period: USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Israel, and all other countries with Schengen visa-free agreements. Check the current Schengen visa-free list at ec.europa.eu as the list evolves with bilateral agreements. Citizens of countries not on the list require a Schengen visa (type C) for short stays or a national D-visa for stays over 90 days.

Slovenia is a Schengen Area member — entering Slovenia means entering the entire Schengen zone. The 90/180 rule applies to all short-stay visitors: maximum 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across all Schengen countries combined. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES), being phased in from 2025–2026, will introduce biometric registration for non-EU visitors at all Schengen external borders. For assistance with complex immigration matters, the Slovenian Ministry of Interior (Ministrstvo za notranje zadeve — mnz.gov.si) handles all immigration policy. UNHCR and NGOs provide support for asylum seekers. The Upravna enota (Administrative Unit) is the primary point of contact for all residence registrations — book appointments well in advance as they can be busy especially in Ljubljana.

💡 The single permit (enotno dovoljenje) combines residence and work permit in one document. The employer initiates the process and applies to ZRSZ for the work permit component. Processing times vary — apply well in advance of the intended start date. Non-EU family members of the employee may apply for family reunification after the main applicant is established.

💡 EU citizens obtain permanent residence right (stalno prebivanje) after 5 years automatically through the simpler EU registration process. Non-EU long-term residents get a separate legal status with enhanced protections. Long-term residents have almost equal rights to Slovenian citizens including labour market access and certain social benefits.

Non-EU remote workers can apply for a Temporary Residence Permit for self-employment (s.p.) by registering as a sole trader through the SPOT business portal (spot.gov.si).

💡 Slovenia has no dedicated digital nomad visa. EU/EEA nationals work remotely without permits — simply register at the Upravna enota. Non-EU remote workers who register a solo-trader s.p. (samozaposlena oseba) via spot.gov.si can obtain a self-employment residence permit. Business activity must be genuine — maintain active client contracts and invoices. Ljubljana has a growing co-working scene. Apply at your local Upravna enota (Administrative Unit) for residency registration. Check mnz.gov.si for current requirements.

Non-EU/EEA nationals with a recognised higher education qualification (university degree, minimum 3 years) and an employment contract with a Slovenian employer. As of 21 July 2025, Slovenia reduced the salary threshold to 1.0× the average gross annual salary (approximately €2,400/month gross in 2026; verify the current threshold at mnz.gov.si before applying). For shortage occupations, a reduced threshold of 0.8× the average may apply.

💡 Slovenia implemented the 2021 EU Blue Card Directive recast effective 21 July 2025, reducing the salary threshold from 1.5× to 1.0× the national average gross annual salary — a significant reduction that broadens eligibility. EU Blue Card holders gain intra-EU mobility after 18 months. Spouse and dependent children receive a residence permit with the right to work. Slovenia is a Schengen member — a Slovenian Blue Card grants free travel across the Schengen zone. The competent authority is the Upravna enota (Administrative Unit) for your municipality.
