ID Austria (Handy-Signatur / ID Austria)
Austria's national digital identity system. ID Austria (the successor to Handy-Signatur, launched in 2022) is a smartphone-based digital signature and identity verification tool. It allows you to sign official documents electronically, log into government portals, verify your identity online, and authenticate with banks and public services — all from your phone. Required for FinanzOnline, oesterreich.gv.at e-government services, and many banking portals.
How to get it: Activate via the ID Austria app (iOS/Android) at any authorised registration point: Meldeamt (Gemeindeamt/Magistrat), A1 stores, Erste Bank branches, or ÖAMTC centres. You will need your Austrian passport or national ID card and your phone. In Vienna: activate at any Magistratisches Bezirksamt (MBA). After activation: download the ID Austria app and complete the QR-code scan at the registration point. The process takes about 15 minutes.
E-Government Portal
https://www.oesterreich.gv.atAustria's e-government system is well-developed. Most interactions with Finanzamt, AMS, and ÖGK can be done electronically. ID Austria (formerly Handy-Signatur) is required for most high-security services. Government websites are primarily in German. Official translations into English available for some common topics at help.gv.at and oesterreich.gv.at.
