Nassau tap water is safe but heavily chlorinated — filtered or bottled water recommended
Nassau's tap water meets WHO safety standards and is technically safe to drink, but is heavily chlorinated and has a brackish taste from desalination mixing with the limestone aquifer. New arrivals from North America and Europe consistently find the taste strong. Family Island properties often rely on rainwater cisterns or boreholes that require active sanitisation maintenance and are more variable in quality. A quality reverse-osmosis under-sink filter (USD 200–400 installed) is more cost-effective long-term than buying bottled water.
⚡ Gastrointestinal adjustment for some new arrivals. Family Island properties may have variable water quality depending on cistern maintenance — not always up to mains standards.
✅ Install an under-sink RO filter soon after arrival — ask your landlord if one is already fitted before purchasing. For short-term rentals, use bottled water while you assess the supply quality. In the Family Islands, confirm whether the property uses BWSC mains supply, a rainwater cistern, or a borehole and ask when the cistern was last cleaned and dosed with chlorine.
