Recognition in The Bahamas is profession-specific — there is no single national qualifications framework. Regulated professions (medicine, nursing, law, pharmacy, teaching, engineering, aviation, maritime) require registration with the relevant Bahamian professional body or ministry before practice is legal. For most business, finance, and commercial roles, employers assess foreign qualifications directly. English is the official language, so language barriers are rarely a concern, but document authentication and professional registration timelines should be factored into relocation planning.
Regulated Professions
Process: Contact the relevant professional board or ministry before accepting the role. Typical steps: (1) Obtain apostilled or notarised copies of degree certificates, professional licences and transcripts from your home country. (2) Obtain a letter of good standing from your current professional regulator. (3) Provide a police clearance certificate from each country of previous residence (usually within 6 months). (4) Submit application to the relevant Bahamian authority with a current work permit (non-Bahamians must hold a valid work permit before registration). (5) Pay registration and licensing fees. (6) Some professions require a local assessment, examination, or supervised practice period before full registration is granted.

Process: Submit certified copies of degree certificates, official transcripts and, if relevant, course syllabi to the employer or professional body. Apostille documents from your home country for regulatory submissions. Direct institution verification may be requested.
Equivalency service: No mandatory national equivalency process. Sector regulators (Bahamas Medical Council, Nursing Council, Ministry of Education) each set their own standards. For academic admission to University of The Bahamas, apply directly with attested transcripts.
Document Rules
Apostille: The Bahamas is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. Documents from other Hague Convention member countries can be apostilled in the issuing country and will be accepted in The Bahamas without further consular legalisation. Bring apostilled copies of all key qualification and civil documents before arrival.
Legalisation: Documents from non-Hague-Convention countries must be legalised through the Bahamas Ministry of Foreign Affairs via a consular authentication chain: notarisation in issuing country → home ministry of foreign affairs → Bahamas High Commission or Embassy → Bahamas Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Sworn translation: Documents not in English must be accompanied by a certified English translation. English is the official language of The Bahamas, so most academic records from the UK, US, Canada and the Caribbean are accepted directly. Use a certified/sworn translator for non-English documents.

Typical Timelines

Immigration work permit approval and professional body registration are completely separate processes — you need both. Non-Bahamians must hold a valid work permit before most professional bodies will process a registration application.
