EU Citizens

EU citizens have no special right to work. Work permits are required like for other non-Bahamians.

Non-EU Citizens

Short-Term Work Permit/Visa covers work up to 90 days. Long-Term Work Permit is required beyond 90 days; fees vary by role and can be high.

EU Blue Card

No EU Blue Card equivalent exists.

Freelancer Visa

BEATS supports remote work for a foreign employer/client base for up to one year. It is not permission to serve the local Bahamian labour market.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours Office work is often Monday-Friday, while tourism, retail, security, marine and healthcare use shifts. Minimum wage remains BSD 6.50/hour, BSD 52/day or BSD 260/week unless updated.

Annual leave Paid vacation depends on Employment Act, tenure, sector and contract.

Sick leave Sick leave and medical certificate requirements depend on law, contract and employer policy.

Trial period Probation should be written into the contract and does not remove permit or minimum wage obligations.

Notice period Notice depends on contract and employment law. Work-permit cancellation and repatriation terms should be checked.

Salary range Local wages are much lower than the cost of premium expat housing; expat packages often rely on housing, car, school and medical allowances.

Pay frequency Weekly, biweekly and monthly payroll all exist. NIB deductions are payroll-based.
