Family Rights & Benefits
Maternity, parental leave and child benefits in Bahamas.
Families should plan dependants, school, private healthcare, hurricane evacuation, birth registration and estate documents before arrival.
Maternity leave
Before birth: At least 1 week before the expected delivery date is required. In practice, employees typically begin leave 2–4 weeks before the due date within the 13-week total entitlement.
After birth: 12 weeks of paid maternity leave under the Employment Act (13 weeks for NIB contributors). At least 8 weeks must be taken after delivery. Eligibility: minimum 12 months continuous service with the same employer; maternity pay cannot have been received in the preceding 3 years. Note: reforms expanding maternity benefits are proposed for mid-2026 — check Tribune242 or the Ministry of Labour for updates.
Job protection: Pregnancy-related protections exist but work-permit validity and employer sponsorship must be managed.
Parental/family leave
Max duration: More limited than many European systems; contract negotiation matters.
