Tax year follows the calendar year. Annual income tax return due by April 30. Quarterly estimated tax payments required if annual liability exceeds Bds$750.
VAT threshold
Bds$200,000 annual taxable supplies (2026). Standard VAT rate: 17.5%. Once registered, file and remit VAT monthly or quarterly via TAMIS. Some professional services and exports are zero-rated or exempt โ confirm your activity category with BRA or a local accountant.

Invoices must include: legal business name and address, TIN, VAT registration number (if VAT-registered), sequential invoice number, invoice date, client name and address, description of services, net amount, VAT rate and amount (if applicable), total amount, currency (BDS$ or foreign), and bank/payment details. Retain all invoices for a minimum of 6 years.
Social security
Self-employed persons must register with NIS (National Insurance Scheme) and pay contributions quarterly. Self-employed NIS rate: 16.1% of insurable earnings (covers employer and employee portions). Insurable earnings ceiling in 2026: Bds$4,880/week (Bds$253,760/year). NIS contributions provide access to sickness benefit, maternity benefit, invalidity benefit, and retirement pension.
๐ก The Barbados Welcome Stamp (12-month remote work visa) permits holders to live in Barbados and work for their overseas employer or clients โ it does NOT authorise freelancing for Barbados-based clients. Holders must pay Barbados income tax on all income earned while resident. A local chartered accountant (member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Barbados โ ICAB) is strongly recommended for tax compliance.
